so here is yesterdays.
Feather shook her head. “No I am just visiting. Shaid
was kind enough to share with me. I must say it is a learn experience, but is
proving to be well worth it. I think there will be a few more sales ahead of
me. If you will excuse me I think my assistant wants me.”
Shaid smiled and said. “I hope you are finding the sale
good as well. This is the first time today that we have had breathing room, and
to think next weekend is to be the big one. I hate to think what it will. Think
I will glad to have one day off.”
Hawk said. “This is your stand?” He looked around him.
Shaid nodded. “They just doubled the size for me, and
glad I am. I don’t know how we would manage if they hadn’t. Just wait tell you
see what she has for next weekend. The advantage of being in place I guess.
They have come to know me as I have been running the stall weekends when the
market was open all winter, and then week day evenings once it opened full time
this spring. Well as long as I had the time.”
Hawk shook his head. “What a waste. For this we had to
make do. I can see I was right to dismiss this market. They have no since of
proity. Well have a stall will give the boy something to do other than getting
in trouble.” He turned and walked off.
Shaid laughed. “So Aren you want something or just
forgot to go after him?”
Aren said. “I should go but I want a quarter yard of
this fabric. I have got to figure out this pattern.”
Shaid said. “How about I just give you the pattern. I’d
weather not sale the cloth for that as that color is one of my better movers
and I am get a bit short. Be back in a bit.” She went to the counter and came
back with some papers. “Hear you go. Some of these you might not want, but I
had made you all a copy of all my new ones. This time as a gift. Next visit
though you will have to pay. Not that I mind the competition, just I can’t get
know for giving away patterns. As I am sure you understand.”
Aren blinked. “Thank you. This will help.”
Shaid said. “It is only fair that you get some of mine
for all you have taught me. I do hope the sale goes good for you. The ones just
getting in will likely still need there red items for Sunday, but most of those
living here bought there’s a few weeks ago. I held a half price sale on red and
the idea kind of got taken up by other stalls.”
He said. “Well that explains why we had such low sales
on reds the first days. They are going
better now.”
Shaid said. “Make sure any going to town for the
actives Sundays has some red on or you will stand out. the idea has really
caught on. See you around, glad to know he was impressed. Or if there is time
tell Marther she should take a walk though the art market. Not only is
Woodright set up, but I think she will find the dancing bear stall worth a
visit.”
Aren said. “Dancingbear? Never heard of them, but will
do. She is to go by Woodright and see about some chairs anyway.” He headed down
the row.
Feather said. “Smoothly done, now they can’t say you
owe them when the other items come out.”
Shaid nodded. “Not only for yours, but I have a few new
colors and patterns that I think will be a hit. He will likely be back with
more comments of no taste and pointing out pieces for who ever he is with to
try and buy after he storms off. That is just how he works. He doesn’t shop
other fabric stalls as that would be lending them power you see.”
Feather said. “So in his world that bazaar insult was a
complement? What a strange childhood you must have had.”
Shaid said. “It wasn’t so strange to me as it is all I
knew.” They got back to work and stayed busy for the week. The market closed
early Friday so the owners could get ready for the weekend. Even though Monday
was to be the big day. They draped the stall in red, some from the other stall
came to help while others went home to see to the goods that were being sent
in. both replacements and stranger items.
On the walk back Feather said. “I will bring your looms
over but what about the ones to sale? Should I wait for Monday?”
Dorthany said. “Why not put ones of local looking woods
in the wagon, but save the more exotic woods and carved ones for Monday?
Shaid said. “That should work, and hold back most of
the new colors but bring out a few.”
Feather nodded. “I will save most of the wall hangings
for Monday as well. Shaid If you are not to tired I will bring over the trade
goods as well and we can go though them. I know your friends are going to drag
you to the games Sunday, and I am planning on going just to see.”
Shaid nodded. “That will be fine. I will have my stuff
out and some Cava waiting.” Shaid went on to her house making sure the door was
open. She set the boxes of goods out then went and got the cava on and a tray
of cookies. Feather and her helpers got there just as the cava was ready. Shaid
carried the try out and showed them into her study. The younger ones looked
around them amazed, Feather and Learna went right to the boxes. “Feel free to
look around. You are not going to be able to get to anything that will bite.”
“So there are things that will bite?”
“Not many, but a few items have some magic to them.
More it is just things that might get you into trouble. But they are locked
away, and no I am not trying to make you go hunting them.”
Feather said. “Surly you do not mean to trade this. Why
it is hard to get.”
Shaid said. “Actually it grows all over. Everything out
here is common to us. Some you might not want, but any you do you are free to
take in exchange for what you have brought me. I have including directions as
to how we use the dys in the boxes with them. I knew that cotton is hard for
you to get so there is a lot of it there. Now if there is something here you
want more of just ask. I got a bit carried away so there is a good chance I
have more than I need.”
Feather said. “There is what we have. Just one of each
but more is coming with the looms. Once we know what you want and what you
don’t. it is all easily found items and I bought a good bit of each, expiations
are in the boxes.” There was very little that either didn’t not want though
there was some they didn’t want a good deal of. It took a bit of haggling each
think the other was giving the items two cheaply finally they settled on a box
for box. The young people were put to work carting the boxes around. When the
looms were brought over Shaid was delighted. They were made of a dark glossy
wood and carved with beats and trees out of dreams.
Father smiled. “See I told you she would like them. You
chose well.”
Shaid looked at the young man who had came in with the
larges of the looms. He hands were fur covered and looked more like claws, his
ears were pointed. “Are you the one who made theses? They are lovely. Thank you
for sharing. I fell I am getting a steal here.”
He said you think they will sale? Really? I had to come
and see. I mean I know I can’t be at the stall but if I am closer.”
Shaid said. “You can come help at the stall on Monday
if you want. That is they day we are going to stop pretending you are not from
the easlands. There will be stares and whispers but they wont bother me. As to
them selling. Well this is what I have been using. It is one of the top models.
Yours are better made and far less complex. Yes they will sale. I don’t know
how well they will do but there will be interest.”
He said. “Really? No kidding? Oh I will have to see. I
hope aunt Dornthy will let me go, at least for a little bit. I never thought
they would sale it was just a hobby.” He danced out the door.
Feather said. “You have made him very happy I just hope
you don’t come to regret it.”
“Why would I? I have no problem with him being there.
Though we will have to make sure he gets the money before letting them take a
loom.”
“He can not hide, and when excited he is likely to change
more. Being young yet he has trouble controlling his body at times.”
Shaid shrugged. “Like I said I don’t mind a few stares.
If it wasn’t for the show factor I wouldn’t have you hide. Truly I think it
will be a good thing for folks along the border to see more of you. It might
help them except the less visible ways they have been changed, as well as easy
some of the fear. Not overnight, I am not that follish. But in a genration or
two, they might not see the east as a place to fear but as a place to respect.”
Feather said. “I hope you are right and it dose.
Respect is safer than fear for all of us. By the way I think some of you books
walked out as well.”
Shaid said. “I am not worried they will make there way
back. I would be more troubled if some hadn’t left.”
Feather shook her head. “See you in the morning. I
think we will need what rest we can get over the next few days.”
Shaid nodded. “See in
the morning. The wagons will be here with the sun again.”
