2012 day one as of yet untitled, fell free to sugest
“People of Donton it
is time to make a stand. For years after the event changed our world we rightly
avoided the east lands. The Gypsen Waste. However in the last generation some
misguide people felt it prudent to set up homes past the safe area, Yes studies
show that the contamination has weakened. But unnecessary risks were taken, but
the safe zone was increased to reflect that. Perhaps even pushed a bit to far. Thoughts
experiments resulted in mutations. Mutations that we cannot the full existent
of! Mutations that since says may be infections and inheritable! The
contaminating theses poor beings bring with them must be contained. It is not
safe to let them continue to live unguarded among us. The risk of the mutations
spreading must no be ignored! It is our duty to see that the Human race
survives, we can not let it fade to history after coming this far. To that end
we must take steps to study those poor affected beings. We must know more about
the mutations. We assure our safety above all else!
Moving the individuals
back to Gypsen accomplishes nothing the border is not secure and too little is
known about the mutations. It is important that we learn how it is transmitted
and how to guard against it. Therefore as we are working on make the Gypsen
border more secure we will be identify and transferring the ones among us to
secure faculties. I know there is fear there. But rest assured every staff
member will have complete back ground checks. All studies will be published.
There will be no backroom experiments! The children involved will be getting
the same education and train as they would outside the faculties. The adults
will have ways to be productive members. They will just be confined to a safe
area. Hopefully a way will be found to prevent the infection from spreading and
the contained areas will not be needed. But should that not be possible once we
have made the board safe we will give them the option of moving.
I assure you was it
not necessary for our safety I would not be asking this. But we must protect
ourselves if we want our life to continue.”
Chapter
1
The man adjusted his tie and nodded to a neighbor then
looked at his daughter. “Vine you look like I am dragging you to lock up. It is
just school. It will do you good to be with people your own age. Education is
important, you can not learn all you need to sitting in your room.”
Vine looked up and sighed. The bit of sky that could be seen
among the buildings was to lifeless. It lacked the red hue the sky at home
would have the sun was blocked from view, the buildings casting shadows that
never full left. There were to many buildings and to little space, to little
life. Looking at the man next to her she
considered how to answer him. “I still don’t see why I have to do this. There
is nothing this school can teach me that will be useful. This was not what I
agreed to when moving here. I am starting to wish I had taken Role advice and
went into the bush. There at least I wouldn’t be forced into a room full of uncivilized
children. Back home children of my age learning there trade, which is what I
should be doing, thought I would be. This school will not give me the training
I need as well as my books and the lessons I have set will. This is just going
to make my hours to learn what I must shorter. What can this school offer me?”
“We have been over this. It is the law that all under
eighteen go to an approved high school during the day.”
Vine said. “There should be a test I could take. To show I
don’t need this, a way to skip to university so I could at least be in classes
that are useful to me. I have no need to learn about Cantor’s government, and
am more then fluent in British. I need more exposure to Combling customs and
lessons in cloth making, trading. I am not the only one who is going to be discussed
by the pointlessness. I can not believe you passed a law that didn’t allow for
over achievers, those that all ready know the contents of the classes.”
He smiled a bit, his daughter still had a lot of growing to
do. This school would be good for her. “There are valid reasons for the law. It
is important that all members are able to contribute, to fill worthy. The
schools help you find the best ways to do so. High schools cover a wide arrange
of subjects so all can get a good grounding. In a few years you will have
enough understanding of your abilities to start more specific training. I realize
that do to the unusual way your childhood has went up to this point a lot of
the classes will be old news to you. But give it a chance. There will be some surprises.
You will see. You need to know more of the world before you commit to a career.
The high school courses are designed so all will be able to make fully informed
choices. To find the role that fits them best so they will be happy with their
life.”
Vine said. “I know what I am going to do. My age doesn’t
affect my ability to know what I want in this world. Some need more time, but
some do not. Forcing all to take the same road is a mistake. But I agreed to
this. Living under your roof means living by your rules. No matter how I find
them. I just wish I had known more about what I was in for.”
A another man hearing this said. “That is just why this law
is a good thing. It will see that the choices are informed choices. Each child
will know all of there options and will start university knowing what they
want. It will shorten the time spent floundering and will eliminate the need of
universities teaching the basics, as those not able to master them will know
they do not belong there. I do wish though that there were some that did not
place freaks in with the normal children. Did you see the news from Runbain?
They still don’t know how contagious it is.”
Vine started to raise a hand to check her braid but stopped
it before the man noticed. Her father said. “Now Olver, genetic mutations can
not pass from person to person unless inherited. Runbain just wants to be
alarmist, remember that law against coffee imports she tried to get passed last
year, claiming they would kill everyone? This is the same. That said schools can
set there enrolment standards how they want just as long as there is a school
for all children in the district. Any school that allows the safety inspectors
in and has the required core classes in place will be accreted and will get its
share of funds.”
Olver said. “Good to know. Don’t think the coffee argument
will do me any good. My brother full aggress that coffee is deadly. But at
least I can tell him that schools can set there own admissions plans. That
should help the phone calls. I will have to get Genea to put it out as well.
Might help the homeschooler protests. A lot of them are church based. Knowing
they can set schools that way might just end them, or at least quite it a bit.
So what has you over here Greg I thought you were putting the kids in East?”
“I have kids in both, they are teaming up so as to fit all
mindsets. East is putting more focus on the sciences and realism as Gaven takes
the more imaginative ones. They expect some movement between the two as the
children learn where there interests are.”
Olver said. “I must have missed that in the papers. In that
case I bet Gret and Paul will be moving to East. Wean though will stay.”
Greg said. “It was
just in East’s papers. I guess Gaven had its papers printed before the agreement
was set and didn’t want to redo them just for that little of a change.”
Olver said. “Well at least I didn’t miss it. I must say I am
not overly impressed with Gaven and was given thought to moving them as it was.
I was going to give it time. Now am glad I have. The office is just though that
door. See you down town.”
Vine waited until the man was out of sight. “Is that typical
of the ones you work with? That would explain a good deal. Did he really name a
child Wean?”
Greg said. “Oliver is more intelligent than his way of speaking
makes him seem. He is the represents the manufacturing district. Wean is a
family name, I believe the boy goes by WJ or some such. Hear we are, see lots
of windows.” He opened the door to the school and led the way to an office just
left of the doorway. There was a big desk, bare save for a computer on one side
an a older man was seated behind it. There were a couple of battered chars to
the side of the desk, otherwise the office was empty.
The man all most looked at them and said. “I fear our
enrollment numbers have been met for this year so unless you are already on the
list I must turn you away.”
Greg said. “I am Senator Blankhim, this is my daughter Vine.
She is all ready enrolled. Just a bit late in starting. Instructor Pulls said
that would not be a problem, was she mistaking?”
“Very well.” He typed something and looked at the computer
screen. “Yes she is here. You need to sign this Sir. Vine, Healn is the student
advisor for your form. She should be here shortly. She will see you find your
way around and assist you in getting the necessary books.” A girl in a dark
blue dress appeared in the doorway. “There you are. This is Vine she is in your
form. Vine this is Healn. Now then as to dress. The code says solid colors,.
Which I am pleased to see you did comply with. Not in the rules, but in common
practices clothing is gender appropriate. Now it is not required but you will
fit in better if you dress like a female after today. Welcome to Gaven academy.
You will find the work hard but worthy.” That was clearly a dismissal of them.
Healn started down the hallway but stopped. Vine looked at
her father. “Is this for real? I knew it was going to be ridicules. But this.
And dresses really?”
Greg said. “No one said you had to wear a dress. He just was
telling you that most girls did, as I told you most in the city would. Give it
a chance and you are not in Alda, use the right language or you will be put in
different classes that you will not like. I will see you at home, now go on before
you get Healn in trouble.”
Vine shook her head but moved down the hall to where Healn
was waiting. Changing languages she said. “That was an interesting introduction
back there. Are things really like that? Why is everything so sterile around
here?”
Healn said. “Mr. Mac is just stressed at the start of the
year he will become more lively. The halls are kept bare to discourage
lingering time should be spent in the classrooms not the halls. Don’t worry you
will adjust. Your clothes and the fact our language seems to take you effort
makes me think you haven’t been here long. Transfers always need a few weeks to
acclimate.”
