Interlude:
The grand kingdom of Dictionary
The grand and glorious rule of all, the anointed and immortal Constantine stood in the hall of ancestors and looked on the portraits of those who had sat on the throne before him and wondered what they would think of him. He was younger than they had been and looked it. His face changed the image that had been the same for so many years, and no amount of makeup could fix it. If only his Grandfather could have held out a few more years. Then he would have aged enough to fit in. But alas his grandfather could barely mange the three hundred he had. He was weaker than the once that had come before him. They had all been getting weaker. But the new blood, for all it changed his appearance a bit, had solved that. He was as strong as the first, the greatest who had started all this. He would rule for a thousand years before succumbing to the ravages of time. But succumb he would. It there was no choice. No answer had been found in all the millennia, and it had been searched. There was rumors that there were some that could bound with beasts and live for a millennium. But only rumors though the waiting spy might be able to put that one to bed. The stones though they were real. With them he could make it to two thousand, perhaps three. After all they had let his barely competent Grandfather make it to three hundred.
Well at lest he had come up with a reason for the change. It made it much easier for those fools to meet with him. He needed them to look to their wallets not his activities. Not if he wanted to get those mines going. By the time they realized the truth it would be too late. Imagine the fools giving him free right to the mountains not even stopping to think why I would want it. Not thinking of what might be there. All I had to do was agree to lower the tariff on their goods. That had all ready been done. The fools! To think I got them all to accept me as the trade commissioner. They fail to see just what power they put in my hands. I can crush them at my leaser now. But first the mountains. To that end he turned and went into his thorn room. Where the spy was waiting his pleasure. First though he would dill with the servant, let the spy see what happens to those who failed him. Turning to the servant he was pleased to see it was quaking. “So what have you to say rat?”
Agard hit the floor. “Please oh Devinne one! Spare this unfortunate fool! It meant no disrespect! It was only doing as the princess commanded. It did not know of your holly orders Oh great King of all.”
Anveray, the guard spoke. “Oh might one this thing was found disobeying your orders. Taking food in to the woman’s area. And not just any food, but food meant to grace your table. I have the tray he was found with here for you examination.” With a flourish he produced a tray that was loaded with candied fruits and fine cuts of meat.
Constantine put his hand to his temple in an air of compilation. “Let me see if I have this right. That thing claims not to have heard my order not to listen to the princess, granted that might be. But the orders regarding men in the woman’s area predate him. Then to Take my food. Such outrages will not be tolerated. You have outlasted you usefulness” Constantine raised his hand and the servant writhed in pain on the floor screaming with pain. He slowly withered away until nothing but dust remained. Constantine looked strangely refreshed. He turned to the guard. “Do as you wish with that tray. See that that mess is cleaned a way.”
The guard’s eyes flashed greedily. “As you desire so may it always be Oh Mighty one.” He bowed and left. Soon a maid was in polishing the floor.
Constantine turned his attention at last to the spy who had wisely keep quit though out the incident. “So Ecchlin you have news for more. Have we found the flying bests or not?”
Ecchlin bowed low and held it, he was not a servant to lie on his belly but neither was he a guard to remain standing. Having held the bow for a full five minutes he slowly straightened, being sure not to look on the Kings face. “Oh grand and Glorious Majesty I have news to tell. But I fear it does not all make for good hearing. Let me get the new of ill hearing out of the way first. As your Greatness knows we have managed to get a spy though the mountains. It is less reliable then one would wish. It gets to hung up on petty details. But form the gleanings of the rat I have managed to learn that there are indeed large flying beats there. Ones of varying intelligence. The ones that are treated as though they were Human.”
Constantine was not able to full suppress his outrage at that. “Surly not. Animals tread as though Human. Who has ever heard of such? It cannot be.”
Ecchlin bowed again and rising said. “That was my very thought but the rat insists it is so. He goes on to say that such beats are even sent to school with the children. As though they were the same! It is outrageous.” He bowed again realizing he had diverted from the concise repot he had meant to deliver. “Forgive me Oh great and Holy. I let myself be cared away. As I was saying, it is with this questionable group that some appear to be bound. The plant was unable to learn much about the bonding. It is all closely guarded, but one thing he was told was that both parties had to be in agreement to it and that each had a price to pay. But as to that price information was shady at best. Something about not having children, and some rubbish of the two being one. That nothing could be hidden.”
Constantine said. “That is troubling indeed. But giving what we had to work with. Hopefully once my people reach the mountains we can get more intelligent people in place.”
Ecchlin bowed. “May that day not be far, Oh wise one. That is the news from the far side. But Oh Great one I have news from this side of the mountains. For to my surprise there are cities set at there feet. Those towns put there by runaways of yourself! Those who thought to argue with your Greatness over education, those who thought it wise to educate everyone. Even the lowest of serfs.”
Constantine grinned. It was an evil look. “We will show them the error of their ways. I was certain that they had perished. Well they will see they cannot escape justice. Justice may be postponed but it can never be escaped.” He rose. “I will give them a chance to repent send an envoy first, then crush them. Yes this is good hearing indeed. It is more than time they paid for the workers they stole.” There had been a increase in necessary killings after they left. Not just of the lower fools. Some of the upper classes had been so polluted by the lies that they had been trying to teach them things they did not need to know. In fact there was still a few found each year. Of course have a law that said any of the lower classes found to have learn above there station were to die painfully and publicly help keep those ‘schools’ small but still there were a few popping up.
Ecchlin, bowing, said. “Your Holiness there is more I think you would enjoy hearing, if I might?” Constantine nodded. Ecchlin continued. “They have been looking in to the mountain and have found it rich indeed. Richer than they know. For there are reports that they have found a cave full of a hard blue stone.” He reached in to his cape and produced the chip with a flourish. “I do believe this might be a match for what thy Greatness told his humble servant to look for. It is but a chip from there attempts to split the first stone they found.”
Constantine snatched the shard and looked at it then back handed Ecchlin. “Fool you wait tell now for this. You are luckily you still have use. Be gone now before I change my mind. You vermin!” Constantine was wishing there was anther who could run the foreign office. But that slob was the best. So he would live for now. He did come up with an idea now and then.
Ecchlin bowed and held the bow as he backed ot the door. Keeping his head down hid his grin. He had done it. He was the one to find the stone. The King would remember that, and he would be rewarded. It couldn’t have gone better. He rose once he was past the door and strode from the palace. Once past the guards he looked around himself with pride, and a grin at the sight of a man teaching a peasant his place. Now this was a city. So much better than any he had seen elsewhere. It was good to be home. Where a man could do as he wished to those under him and none would say neigh. So much better then the outsiders. Imagine getting mad because one slapped an underling. And to think they allowed their women to say no. Not there men folk, as was the right. But the women their selves. It was almost as bad as going to school with non-human filth. Though they came close to that, letting servants in their schools. Soon though they would see the light. He collected his bags and the boy to carry them and set off to his house. It would be good to see his wife again.
Soon he was at his house, the boy sweating to keep up with his burden, but knowing better than to complain. Ecchlin strode though his door and was met by his servant. “Take the packages to the family room and give the lad his cooper.” With that he strode into his lady’s bower. The attendants all went to knee and his wife rose to great him.
His wife smiled, “I did not expect to see you so soon.”
He nodded and said, “Out.” The servants left and her turned to his wife. “I would have thought you would think that my absence had been more than long enough dear. Now I think you want to welcome me home in a proper fashion.”
Her smile looked a bit forced this time. “But of course I do. It is good indeed to have home.” He strode over to her and kissed her as removing her gown.
The servants he had sent from the room went to their various ways. Some went to help get the children ready for his viewing, others to see that his room was ready, and everything as he liked. One to the kitchen to tell the cooks then on to the market with the long list of things the cook needed.
Racheal left by the back door making sure her head was covered and the basket was firmly on her arm. She kept her eyes down once on the street. It would not do to seem forward by looking on a Lord. She saw to it that she did not stray from the narrow track by the buildings. All this things limited the chance that person would find offense with her. Her first stop was the fresh food seller. She entered the market and stood silent at the left of the door. Waiting to be noticed. One such as she did not touch the goods lest they be tainted.
After a few minutes the store boy finished with the lady he was helping and turned to her. He was no more than fourteen if that to her twenty. He looked her over then sneered. “What do you need?”
Racheal answered, “If it pleases sir the House of Sither needs some of your good beef and three whale stakes. Also some ripe pears and peaches. If it pleases sir.”
The boy groped her a bit then with leer went and filed the order. “Might could get a bit more for a leg.”
Recheal hid her disgust. “My lord will not have that sir. I beg you. Thank you for the goods.” The lad gave her anther squeeze before going to the next customer. Racheal left the store glad to be away so easily. Most of the girls had more trouble, but then they tend not to be so careful.
Recheal had to pause on her way to the next store. Some lad had dared speak to a maid of hire station. Right in front of the store she needed to enter. Once the beating was done she was able to go in and get the goods there. With no hassle, thank goodness. This store keep was of lower house, still above a mere servant like her, but not wanting to risk the house’s anger.
The next store was her last in it she had to wait for the proprietor to finish with the one in front of her. One he was done he tuned leaving the girl undressed. Ignoring the girls please to be covered, he had tied her hands; of course, he leered at Recheal and finished doing up his cloths. Then said. “And what does Sither ask this time bitch?”
She had to be careful his house was nobled, her lords house not yet been. She said, trying to ignore the girl, glad he had his fill before she came. “We would like it if you could see your way to sell us some of your fabulous spices. I have a list from my Lady.” It had of course been writing by the clerk but no reason to say what they all knew. Some might let the women in noble houses read but her lord was not one such. She held the list out.
The man took it and looked her over as he did so. “A bit plain aren’t you. Hum I will see what I have. Stay.” With that he turned to the bins on the other side of the store. She stayed rooted in place as ordered. A few lads entered and started looking in the bins. Then noticed her and the other servant. To Racheal’s reliefs the barely gave her a glance but the other the showed evident desire. The proprietor looked over and saw them. He nodded and with a smile said, “Help your selves lads.”
With a grin the boys moved to the naked servant and the started to drop their pants molesting her breasts. She whimpered and try to move away. That just made them garb harder. The proprietor waited until the first one was done and the second started to bring Racheal goods to her. By then he had recovered his interest. So of course that had to be taken care of before she could leave. She stood her ground as he undid the fasteners holding her gown closed and pushed it open then took care of himself. There was nothing else to do his word was law. He could do as he pleased with the likes of her. As her lord could and did with any of the women in his house. It was not the first nor would it be the last.
He finished with a grunt and moved away. “Be gone runt.” Fixing her gowns fasteners she left the store. Only to bump into a guard. The Guard grabbed her arm and looked her over. “Not worth my time wench. Watch where you are going idiot.” He sent her on her way with slap on the backside then grabbed anther who had more curves and more hair showing and pulled her in a nearby alley. As Rechale passed she could hear the servants cries and his grunts. He sounded to be rough. She was glad he had found her lacking. She headed home, glad that only one had found her worthy on this trip.
At home she was sent back to the bower after dropping off the market basket. When she got there she found the Lord waiting on her, she whisd she could disappear, he was not looking pleased. Ecchlin said. “I do not recall giving you permission to leave the house, whore. Remove your clothes.” She did so. He grabbed her and though her into the wall. There was all ready blood on the floor under her, so she had not been the first to fill his anger. He snapped her wrist in the cuffs and then beat her tell her blood joined that on the floor. “You have been making to many trips without permission. I see I will have to see that the doors are locked tight next time I leave home. Now then what do you say.”
Rachale swallowed was this the time he would tire of her? “Thank you for teaching me Sir. I am just an idiot who lives by your grace. Do let me pleases you. I am yours to teach and use as you see fit.” If he locked them in it would mean that next time he went they were deigned fresh food. At least Mistress had thought to lie in a good store this time. Though they would pay. Likely she would beat them again as he would see she bled when he saw the bills. Then to not be able to get out or have visitors would make her testy, so the beatings would be more often. But such was life.
He said. “Very good and serve me you will.” He moved up behind her and took her then undid the chains. “Turn and clean me.” She did so, falling to her knees before him. “Now you may crawl as you are, down to the kennels. I am sure you will be made much of. You will stay there on your knees tell I summon you. Then you had best come on your knees and perhaps you will have earned the right to stand. Clothes will be long in returning. Be gone dog.” She fled on her knees grateful to have her life. Hoping that he would not make her breed. But it was up to him. As long as she was in the kennels any one could do with her as they pleased. Including the males in the kennel. If she was released she would by higher then the ones still in there but still at the use of any with clothes. She could only hope he did not put her out in such a position. She crawled down the hall knowing the same was happening though out the land. How she wished she lived some where else.
