Excerpt days 3 and 4
Serenity shook her head. Just what was she going to do with these to. “We talked about this. It will good for both of you to know more children. Yes you have each other, but you need to get to know others. You need to know how to relate to others. Just what do think is going to happen? You have left her before, while you two were exploring. What is so different this time?”
Rule said, “That was different we were outside. I could get to her in no time. Plus she had all the room she needed. Here there are walls between us, locking her in. I just don’t understand why we have to be separated. After all I know all that she does, and she knows what I do. It is silly. We would lean much faster together. Who needs all those strangers. This is just because.”
Raven put a hand on his shoulder interrupting him. “It is all right. You are never more than a thought away. I can deal so can you.” Silently she told him ‘Think Mom doesn’t need more grief. This isn’t easy on her either. She is doing the best she can.’ Aloud she continued, “After all you won’t be more than a thought, I mean shout, away. Right? We can handle it. At lest as long as they do not try and lock me up. That wouldn’t be good.”
Serenity looked at her godchild a bit. “There aren’t looks on the classroom doors are there?” Both shuck their heads. “Well then how could they lock any one in?” She held up a hand to stop the answer, “However, before you two cook up some way for them to, I will add that to the list of things I need to tell them. Now let’s get back to the school.”
Raven climbed on to Rule’s back and the pair of them were off. Serenity watched them a bit before taking off herself. That was anther thing she would have to explain. By town standers, by any really, he shouldn’t be able to carry her for a few years yet. Yet he started to last year. Raven said she just sent most of her weight away and they managed just fine. After asking once Serenity and Willow had deiced they were better of not knowing. The kids’ answers tended to raise more questions than they answered. It was just a short hope to the school. Unfortunately the principle was outside when they arrived.
Raven slid down and bowed, hoping she had that right. Town life was so complicated! “Sir Rule and I are sorry that we caused you distress. We did not stop to think how it would look to you. We will do our best not to be so thoughtless.”
The principal did not seem to hear a word she said. He ran up to Rule. “Are you all right young man? Just what were you thinking?!”
Rule blink. “Yes I am fine Mr. Typhoon. We were just bored, so thought to go. As Raven said we did not mean to scare anyone. Back home we often went off for a bit. We forgot that you would not know that we do not get lost. Or not so lost we can’t find a way back.”
Mr. Typhoon went on as though he had not heard a word. Indeed the words had not yet registered with him. “Carrying such a weight! At you age! It is to much stain for young wings. Where do they hurt?”
Rule looked at him puzzled. “Nothing hurts. I have move logs. Carrying Raven is nothing. I don’t see the problem.”
Raven hit her head. “We did it again. Remember what old man Riser, well this is the same thing. said. Dragons are, by and large, unable to carry a human before their thirteen-birth day. Rare is exception. I should have let Mom bring me. We scared him again.”
Mr. Typhoon was looking from one to the other. Serenity choose that moment to land, thus given him a new focus. She spoke before he could. “Oh dear, you were outside and they have managed to shook you aging. I assure you my son is fine. It worried me to the first time I saw them flying. I had him thoroughly checked over and the Doctor found no hurt, so I just gave up. I shall have to amend that, can’t have them scaring folks.”
Rule said, “No more flying with raven around town. But can we fly when in the hills, as long as we look first?”
Serenity nodded, “That should work. Now then about school. I trust you two have apologized?”
Raven said, “I did, but I don’t think he heard me.” She turned and bowed again. Still not sure she was doing it right. “As I said, Sir. We are both sorry for scarring you and the rest like we did. We did not stop to think how it would look to you. We were just tired of wasting time doing nothing.”
Mr. Typhoon looked at them. And shook his head. “Let me see if I understand this. You were bored so you decide to skip school and the only thing you can think is to apologize for scare me? Just what is that to fix?”
Raven said, “It fixes nothing. But it does let you know we regret it and will do our best not to scare you like that again. I know that you feel we should have been at the school, but truly do not see the point. However we have promised to give it anther try.”
Mr. Typhoon shook his head. Just who did these kids think they were. He turned to Serenity, ignoring the kids. “You do know that it is required that children be educated? It is your responsible to see to it. I hope you can control your child. I will be speaking to Raven’s mother on this as well. Now this day is spent. But I expect them here at eight and they had best not disappear, or I will be forced to involve others.”
Serenity said, “I see what they meant about you not listening. Now they will be here, but you need to make a bit of change to there placement. For you see both of them have paced there A levels. So they need to be in a high class. Which I believe start and end later.”
Mr. Typhoon said, “I will need to see the papers.” Rave pulled them out of her bag and handed them over. He took the papers and made a show of looking though them. “Hum well as a rule we do not like to over work the children like this. But as it is done there is nothing I can do. Fine I will put them in year eight. So you need not arrive until 8:30.”
Serenity nodded, “They will be here and they will stay the whole day. There is one other small matter. Do your classrooms have locks on the doors?”
A very outraged answer. “NO of course not. What would ever give you such an idea?”
Serenity nodded, “That is what I thought, but they were a bit worried. You see it is just that Raven tends to react very badly to being looked in and I would hat for a door to be blown up. Also I am give to understand that from your eighth leave on up the students rotate rooms.” Mr. Typhoon nodded. “Well if it is possible, and I understand it might not be, it would be far easier on you and your teachers if these two imps were allowed a class or two together. They are rather attached and dislike be apart for long.”
Mr. Typhoon said, “I will consider that, but I can make no guaranties. I will have the schedule waiting on them.” With that he turned and went in with out so much as a glance at the children.
Raven watched him go in and then muttered. “This is going to fun. What is he doing working at a school when he can’t treat kids like people. You would think we were draft animals.”
Patience chose not to hear that and the trio set of walking home. Their route took them though the farmers market were there pace got slowed. Not just by the increase of traffic, but because Raven could not pass a booth without looking. At lest they did not have to pass though downtown, with all its shops. Who knows how long that would have taken. With luck she would be fine just looking at the windows. As long as there were no books or stationary. Those things had to get a complete examination.
Raven paused a bit longer before a stand selling carvings. Serenity smiled, wondering what it would be this time. She rent up to the sand herself and saw most of the carvings were ivory. Before Raven reached for a carving Serenity spoke to the stall holder. “Those are lovely. Just where did you get the ivory to make all them?”
The stall holder answered. “Oh it is all from the farm raised red elephants. No wild ones, I assure you. My son is a sensitive to. Wont find any poached in my stock. Might be a bit of rhino but that’s it. I swear good lady. Got us a right big farm, run around 200 head give or take.”
Serenity nodded, “Ok Raven, now what is it this time?”
To her surprise it was not one of the ivory figures Raven reached for, but a lump of red stone. She picked it up and turned it so the sun hit it, making it dance a bit. She seemed to be ready to pay She had reached towards her bag. But then turned back and picked up a little ivory wagon and team. “Oh this to. Now then your sign says that the little figures are 2.50 and um paperweights are 1.00. So I owe you 3.50, or is this stone not a paperweight?”
The stall holder looked over the items. “Nope that’s right. Thank you.”
Raven smiled and hand over the money. “No thank you. I will be sure to check back and look at your bigger ones when I get my allowance in a few days. That work dragon there is simple perfectly mischievous. I can’t believe no one hasn’t snatched him up yet.”
The stall holder laughed, “That one, dear, Is just for display. That one is too dear to part with. But he dose draw the customers in.”
Raven thanked her again and they continued on their way. Serenity waited until they were out of ear shoot, and though the market then turned to Raven. “Now then it is a good thing you aren’t a dragon dear or you would make those tails of dragons keeping hoards of sparkly things look right. Just what is it about this stone?”
Raven blushed a bit. “I do not hoard. Well ok so I have more pens and paper than I really need. But you can’t always buy it when you need it most so it is best to be ready. And besides that doesn’t sparkle. Well most of it. Any way. Just look at the detail on this wagon. See you can even make out that it is hulling apples. They even got the shoulder mussel right on the hulldragons.”
Rule interrupted. “Speaking of hulldragons you had best stop before you get run over. I don’t think that guy has to good control over his team.”
Raven looked up and sure enough there was a rough looking team coming down the road. “Why would they turn such an inexperienced drive loose on the roads this time of the day? Someone could get hurt. I know they are no bigger than a young rhino, but that is more than big enough to do damage. Look at what the rhinos do, and they don’t have claws. Do you think we should help?”
Rule said, “That was different we were outside. I could get to her in no time. Plus she had all the room she needed. Here there are walls between us, locking her in.
