a bit of something new as I can not get bac to the other one.
“Freak!” “Monster!” “Idiot!” “Mutei!” “Go back
where you come from mutant!” “Where is your keeper mutt?”
As the shouts reached her Vine had to force herself
to keep from checking that her braid was in place. They were not talking to her
but it would not do to draw their attention. At lest she was a bit luckier than
some. Her blue hair was dark enough when braided to be taken for black most
times, and with her eyes hidden by her glasses she was mostly able to hide. As
long as she kept a distance around her the protesters left her alone. Still she
was no happier with the new law than they were. She would much rather be in her
room with her books then facing anther day sitting in a class room starring at
a wall. Back before she knew what a school was she thought it would be
nice. Back when she thought she would
learn something.
Her stepfather saw her look and said. “You will not
be going to the public school in this town which is where the yelling is
aimed. Hopefully it will be better so
you will not get expelled again. Five is enough, I would think.”
Vine
winced. “I really did try. But he insisted I put my notebook away and use the
projector board only. I warned him it was not a good idea. I would have put it
in my notebook and not made him look so foolish if he would have let me. It is
not my fault he was talking about things he didn’t know.”
Harry
nodded. “I know dear, and he should not have been teaching that class. Not if
he was that foolish. I do not want you to keep your thoughts to your self.
School should help your knowledge grow not shrink it. Teachers who do not know
the subject are doing more harm than good. I just hope this school is better. I
was not blaming you.” He was wondered just what all had happened before they
got custody of her, then again it was likely a good thing he didn’t know. Given
how she acted little of it was good. “I just hope this school is what I was
told it was. If so then you will be asked to share your thoughts, but will not
be punished for it. Even should they differ from the teachers.”
Anther man
said. “Punished for have a different opinion? That had better not happen. If so
I had better hear about it so I can take care if the teacher. It is by
exploring our difference that knowledge grows. I welcome changes by students
and expect all my teachers to do the same. Welcome to Aulander Academy. I am
sorry about the protesters. They will leave latter in the year. We are a bit
close to one of the public schools and they make a point to gather on the route
to it. I try to get them to leave or at least move, but I have little luck at
doing anything other than keeping them off the doorstep.”
“But they
will pretty much leave you alone as long as you are wearing your blazer. It is
just folks going to the public school they hassle. I see to it that any I see
getting razed have information on this school. It is better anyway and why have
the headache as well as an inferior education just to make a point right?”
Vain
blinked. “Um it was more correcting the teacher than just a defiance. He moved
Loggers a few miles east and a few hundred years back in time. After open the
class by calling us all rats, not intentional, but he was trying to speak
Caiding. Just had the wrong words. I didn’t set out to make him look foolish
but by the end of the class I kind of had. So was told not to return.”
“You’re
kidding? Who in their right mind would try and speak Caiding if they are not
sure. It is so easy to mess up. Just where was this?”
Harry says.
“Really that is what got her expelled from the last school, in Runi. Luckily we
were already moving, as she had run out of schools. Not that it was her fault
by any means. She lasted longer at a few of those schools than I would have. I
understand why they made the law, but they need to have a few more options in
it for those inclined to study.”
The man
nodded. “That would make you the Havens then. Welcome Vine I do hope you will
like it here. About the only thing that will get you expelled here is
intolerance, and I don’t think that is your problem. I am Alxe, and this is my
school. And that young man there is Grant. Why don’t you take the tour while
you father and I finish the boring paper work? We will go over the classes when
you reach my office.”
