Isaac said. “See I told you she would be shocked. This is all data
that should be preserved, but was being let parish. The elders agreed that if
you were willing to undertake compiling it. Then they have no problem with you
undertaking the task. And as said, the material here is yours to take and work
on where ever you go. They did say they would like a copy of the work you compile.”
Sara said. “Of course they will get copies as it is finished. Or do
you think they want to see the notes? I just thought they would be as much of a
mess as the books. I’m not trying to hide, after all history belongs to all.”
“I know your not child. I ‘m just telling you what they said, and I
think the finished papers would be best, after all they will be far easier to
organize. Run on now and get some work done before time to start supper. You
may do you school work in the family room tonight after supper.” Sara curtsied
and went up to her room. As her computer was turning on she took out her
necklace. ‘how the road’ ‘any news’ Viv was still worried.
It was not long tell the charm warmed ‘road rough slow’ ‘home wind damages’
‘few little hurts’ ‘you surprise good’
Sara relaxed glad to know someone had heard a bit. ‘uncle sent
other town’ ‘lots old paper mine’ She knew that Viv would understand.
Sure enough she felt her excitement. ‘good more data’ ‘get typing
latter’
Sara said. ‘glad home well’ ‘stay safe’. Then opened her document and
managed to get another three pages typed up. It would be far easer if she didn’t
have to keep adding words to the dictionary, and rechecking the spelling of
them. So few of the terms used now were in the program they had. She headed
downstairs and saw Jacob on the way, still think of the dictionary issues she
said. “Say Jay if you and your friends are still looking for a big project, how
about updating the word processing programs with the modern way. I mean they
are still using pre change spelling and grammar. It would make essays easier if
we didn’t have to keep triple checking which was right. Or is that only me?”
Jacob said. “I don’t think anyone thought of that and your rigt
none of those have had any big changes made to them in at least fifty years.
That is needed and well over do. Giving you fits is it?”
Sara said. “A few, mostly with spellings, it is good at making me
think I have it wrong. So I refer back to the book, then to another incase the
first is wrong. It makes it harder to type the paper up.”
Jacob said. “I bet there would be less complaints if it was up
dated. I am sure you are not the only one who has to cross check those things.
Thanks sis, that is better than anything we had come up with. As old as the
code is I bet it will be fun to dig in. Even if we end up rewriting it all. I
will have to see what the guys say, but I bet we will be writing it up. Hay we
can use that, those errors, as evidence. It will give us our argument even.
Nice.”
Sara laughed. “Have fun.” She headed on down stairs to see what she
could do for supper.
Edith looked up. “Good, you have the desert. We need three cakes.
Both of your Uncles and there families will be here. We need to start planning the
family’s part of Saturdays feast.”
Sara paused she had forgot about the result feast. It was a big
deal, there would be a reading of the results and the funding granted to the
town for the next year. Then the women set the tables as the men started talking
how best to use the money. The ones who took the test were seated at the top
table, and were thanked for there effort. She paled a bit as she moved to the
counter. “I had better make one cinnamon then. Uncle Ab would be upset if there
wasn’t a spice on the table. Should I make one of the others berry?”
Edith said. “That sounds fine. You of course, as guest of the feast
will not take part in any of the planning or preparation. But you will have enough
to do as it is with your paper and those old papers. Just what will you do with
that trash?”
Sara ducked her head. “I guess I have a life project. I am stunned,
truly to have it, but I am glad to have records from other towns to look it. It
will be interesting to see how they compare. I will make a record for them as I
will, or hope to, of ours. The more there is to include the fuller the record
will be.”
Edith said. “I just hope you don’t get even more turned.”
That night she wrote a letter to Jack about the books explaining it
would be a bit tell she could go though them and see if the pattern still held,
then gave it to Mr. Bixter to send the next day. If he had a problem with it he
didn’t share it. The week passed and Sara settled back into her home. There
were conversations that stopped when she entered a room. At home she put it
down as the feast planning, and at school to the rumors that would catch up
with her eventually. But none of it was worth worrying about. Zac and Abiram
made a point of sitting with her at lunch, but she knew she was being shunned.
But she had expected it to happen. She got her paper typed up and stayed up
late Friday printing out four copies of it.
Saturday she woke with a start in a lot of pain. It took her a bit
to remember the necklace. By the time she had it out Viv had written her. ‘bad
road bump’ ‘arm broke but safe’ ‘home letter soon’
Sara frowned. ‘u sure.’ ‘glad home’ ‘take care rest’ Viv had said
the road was real bad but the teachers had decided against stopping as there
was another storm forming. Still just how had the arm got broken, and there was
more then a hurt arm.
The charm warmed. ‘grandma fixing me’ ‘sleep medicine now’ She felt
a since of heat and remembered that Viv’s grandmother was a healer. She would
set her right. Still there was no point in trying to go back to sleep after
that.
