When they got to the house Isaac
said. “Take your things up stairs then come down, suppers waiting. You can
unpack after.”
Sara curtsied. “Yes sir.” She reached
for the bag of hers Abiram had but he shook his head.
“I will take this up then get mine.
Your legs are bound to be hurting. No need to add to it by carrying this bag of
books.”
Sara blushed. “Thank you." Up in
her room Sara looked around, surprised at how small it seemed. It felt odd to
home, not what she had expected it to feel like. Yes she was glad to be but
still something was missing. She took out her necklace and the letters. ‘home
safe beat rain’ Abiram was watching her, she clods her hand around it and said.
“Just letting Viv know I made it safely. She likely has Jack there demanding
news. He said he would meat up with her to find out.”
Abiram said. “I don’t know what dad
will make of that toy. But dose Viv have a different name or can you give her
one? And don’t forget your tea. It seems to be helping, you are barely limping
and there is a lot of rain in those clouds.”
Sara reached in her bag and pulled
out a small container. “I have more, he saw to it I have a bit over a months
worth, but it is buried in the basket. Her letters will say Violet not Viv, and
I will try to remember to use that.”
He nodded. “I had best go get my
bags. See you down stairs.” With that he
left.
Sara felt the necklace warm and
looked at it. ‘good storm bad big’ She tucked the necklace away as she made her
way down the back stairs she could feel Viv’s reliefs and hoped Viv felt her
warning, and joy at being home. There wasn’t time to write back just then. She wouldn’t
dare reply until back in her room. The back stairs let out in the kitchen, the
others looked up as she entered.
Her mother said. “You were to go to
the dining room. You must be tired.”
Sara said. “Not that bad, Ma’am. I
just wanted to get two cups of hot water before the tea was made if possible. I
have a new tea for Grandfarther’s joints. I want to see if he likes it before I
put the big box of it in the cupboard.” She opened the container and took out
the tea bag, and offered it to her mother.
She glanced at it then picked it up.
“Hum the doctor suggested this, but couldn’t find it. Let me get the cups. Why
two?” She gave her the tea back and Sara put it in the container, then into her
pocket.
Sara said. “I have the companies
ordering information so if he likes it we can get more easily. I was told it
wouldn’t hurt to give the others a cup when there legs and backs are bothering
them during harvest. The only side effect is it might make them a bit tired.
The same one that recommended the tea for grandfather also had some that might
make it so I don’t have to take my medicine so much. ”
Edith frowned but handed her two
cups. “He should be at the table where you should be.”
.Sara said. “Thank you ma’am.” And
left the kitchen.
Her father smiled as she came out. “I
should have known, at least they sent you out.” He looked oddly at the cups.
Sara walked over to her grandfather
and set them down then got out the canister. “I have a new kind of tea that is
to help with aching joints. It is safe enough that the guys can trying after
harvest for there back and legs. The only possible side effect it a bit of
tiredness, but in the evening that shouldn’t be a problem. Will you try it for
me Grandpa? I don’t know what it tastes like, but it smells good.” She took the
bag out of the canister and opened it.
Her grandfather looked at her. “Won’t
hurt to try, but if it makes me rummy I wont have any more of it.”
Sara said. “I was garneted it
wouldn’t. If it dose, double the cost refund should it do so. The ones
recommend for me have no unexpected side effects, not even the ones I was
warned they might have.” She put one of the small tea bags in the cup, then
opened another bag and put it in her cup. “It said steep for three minuets, but
you might want to taste it. I don’t know how strong that will be. I found a lot
of teas weak. I like mine better at five minuets, and the store owner said that
it would be fine to steep it longer, just not less.”
Her father said. “May I see those a
moment?” Sara handed him the bags, he read the labels then hand them back to
her. She put them away and picked up her cup. “Where did you find it and how?”
Sara said. “There was a good herb
store in the mall by the testing center. I bought enough for a month, roughly,
and have the information needed to order more. I didn’t think it would hurt to
try it.”
Isaac said. “No, in fact there are
things in both of those teas we had been trying to find. I was just wondering
how you happened on them.”
Sara sat down in her chair before
answering, she didn’t want to say to much, but yet enough that he wouldn’t
worry. “Well there was this bad rainstorm the seconded day of testing, and
servile of the people I was sitting with were recruiters from one of the
schools. When I had to take my medicine I learned one of them was a medical
student, and he was rather upset. He met me at the mall during a break the next
day and had me go with him to the store.”
Isaac frowned a bit Abiram said. “She
was sitting at one of the tables in the back of the room working on her paper.
They were talking weather patterns, and some of it tied into the notes for her
paper. That led to them wanting to see the paper and moving over to her table.”
Isaac said. “So you worked on your
paper still? I was just wondering how green of a student he was?”
Sara said. “I didn’t ask, but the fact
he was not being supervised and a few other things I would guess at least six
years of study at that point Sir. Yes, I am now ready to get my paper typed up.
I was worked about to little information, but it turned out I have to much. I
decided to just focus on why the buildings are the shape they are. But there
were a few things I debated about including, but have realized I have to for
the paper to be useful.”
Isaac said. “What sort of things? I
never thought about those old journals being troubling.”
Sara said. “Mostly they are not.
However there are some dealing with early negations for land. It turns out that
some of those are related to building shapes. They are why the town hall has
six round corners and four square corners. There is some do with the way the
storms came in that governed the placement of the turnings.” She stopped
blushing at the way her tongue had got away from her.
Isaac said. “So that is why. Yes
those dealings need to be in there, they are a part of what formed the town. It
is the whole story that needs to be told, not the selected bits.” Supper was
being placed on the table and Edith stiffed a bit, but made no comet. “I must
say it sounds like there is a lot to be learned form those old books. The boys
kept setting them aside for you, there is a basket in the hall for you to go
though latter.”
Sara said. “Thank you Sir. I think I
have a lifetime project in those old journals. I am grateful that Uncle didn’t
mind me fishing them out of the bins.” She filled her plate as the food reached
her. “I had no idea how much there was they had to teach when I started.”
Isaac said. “Neither did he, in fact
he apologized for letting you bring them home those first few times. But what
you had was old world paper it is harder to process and they were out of the chemicals.
He expected you would bring them back, but then you found something that needed
doing. History needs to be preserved.”
Sara said. “In truth I wasn’t even
thinking about that when I started. I was just attracted to the odd writing.
Then I got into the stories. A few of them started before the town was founded,
it was the first I had read of that time.”
Isaac nodded. “It was good you had
saved them, and a worthy project it is. But you are getting to old to be
collecting the bins, so it is time that the younger ones get the task. They can
bring the books and papers to you afterwards. Abe will see they get sorted
right., and the leaders have no problems with them being brought to the house.
In fact they have indicated they will take care of postage should it be
necessary. “
Sara blushed and was glad she hadn’t
been taking a bite of anything. “That is kind of them. I didn’t know they had
taken any interest. I hope I am not put my feet where I shouldn’t.” Her mother
was looking stormy, clearly she didn’t approve.
Isaac said. “Not at all, they see
what you are doing as needed and worthy. All were to busy those first years to
worry about keeping a record. It is time someone started putting one together.
It is fitting that you should.” He turned to Abiram and Sara relaxed a bit,
glad to be out of the hot seat. “So Abiram, how were the tests? I understand
there were a lot of schools there.”
Abiram said. “The tests weren’t as
bad as I thought they would be, I did well enough to get a few good offers.
There were a lot of schools we don’t see, but a lot seemed focused on magic, I
was surprised at how big the study of it seems be. Most of the top ten had representatives there
and all of them had at least some classes, most had a degree program for it.”
Isaac nodded. “That is the trend. We
need to work more on the programs our schools offer. But that is a debate we
have had for a long time. I trust you didn’t spend all your time watching your
sister.”
Abiram said. “No, actually she was
hanging out with another girl more than me. I had a lot of time to do as I
wanted. W were in a good area of town so I wasn’t worried about her. The
streets there were better than some at the markets.”
Isaac nodded. “Good, now eat up so
you can go unpack.” Sara paid no attention to the talk after that, sure it
wouldn’t involve her. After the meal she went back up to her room to unpack.
