I said it might contunue
John smiled. “I hope you found one of Grant’s so you know just where Gram missed up on that hummingbird, or was that not in your copy of the text book?”
Samantha said. “You mean his blood drinking one? Sadly it was a real creation. I do hope they were all killed, but his code for it was right, they really did twist some like that. Falkner covers them in his Africa history, as it was the tinkers there that made them. Falkner was an approved biography and one librarian goofed up and out his histories on the shelf to and even let me take them home. I kept them until I had read them all, knowing I wouldn’t likely get another chance. That one wasn’t just a look how dangerous the untamed world is creation. The killer kitties however seem to be. The only thing I can think of is the some how confused a mountain lion for a house cat. However the only cats with the fangs are saber-toothed cats, and I never heard of them being revived so I still am puzzled by that one.”
Sam said. “I am a bit more troubled by the dangerous trees myself. I could see them dreaming up the killer kittens as silly as they are. Cats are hunter, but trees?”
Edith said. “Well if you are walking under fruit or nut tress it can cause bumps at the right time of the year and then braches do fall, hence they can cause damage. Therefore they are dangerous to have around.” She was fighting to keep her face strait.
Samantha said. “I have to sit a bit, sorry guys. The story makes since only if the hero had never been in a forest but he was a world explore. So the only thing must be he somehow stumped into the one patch of walking trees that lived outside of the lab and they didn’t like being found out. I mean the pitchers had them with ropes and knifes. Not that it made sense to me. I would think they could just pick him up and drop him from their tops. They had no need of the knife and I don’t know what the rope was for.”
Mike said. “Nothing to be sorry about, sitting a bit might just keep those two from having to pick me up. There are some chairs there. I never thought of walking trees but that would fit.” He almost fell into the chair but did make it onto it and not the floor. The rest sat a bit more slowly. Sam shook his head a bit, wondering why Mike had to play it up so much. Yes he had likely need to sit as well, but he usually made it a few more feet before he was that bad.
Samantha said. “I had to do something to get though the lessons so I started trying to come up with reasons for them, kind of got a few extra assignments until I learned not to work though them with out writing them out. However it was less trouble than laughing caused me.”
Edith said. “You don’t have to worry about laughing here, chances are Mr. Robbles will be laughing as well. Though when we had outside teachers they would turn red and storm out occasionally, more so when they learned they could but the whole class into detention as the Superintend failed to keep from laughing. No one here can see how those stories could be real, but I do see why they would believe them a bit more in the cities. I think half of them are there just to make everyone happy with the fences.”
Sam nodded. “Just so, the purpose of them is to reinforce the danges of the untamed nature and the heroic deeds of our leads as the stove to see we had a safe place. Really, that is right from one of Dad’s text books. That is why so much of it is so silly to us, but perhaps that is a help. I mean if they had of been a bit more tailored in the lesson we might not know how silly it was. A lot of people out east are down right scary in their praise of the government and its wisdom. They seem to be convinced that it should never be questioned, no matter what. I think they would freely turn over their children to the government.”
Samantha said. “Not quite, they tried to make military training mandatory for boys, but there was protest over it. However more parents are willing agreeing that those with Adsons may be used for testing. And the deaths that come from those tests are getting less notice than they used to. It is scary and getting worse. I do wonder just what the point of it is.” That much should be safe enough even in light of my asking about the separate shots earlier. Someone did need to be looking.
John frowned a bit. “Just what kind of tests?”
Samantha shrugged, as she flashed back to a night spent in a locked office reading papers marked classified. That night and the next few insured she didn’t care what arguments Roger and her grandparents made latter they were not going to get her to ask to go to a care home. I can’t say anything that suggests I was in a testing center, but making them wonder should be safe. “All they say is that it is for the cure, so that must be it. If you trust them, and if you then you are left wondering what kinds of test they could be doing. More so now, you know?” They blinked a bit then nodded as the fears of just what the government would do if they knew. “I think I can walk now so we had best get moving before Sam’s dad thinks we are skipping.”
They laughed and Sam said. “Not to worry he would just ask me who broke what this time. The teachers are all used to me missing a class or two. It is not that big of a problem. The teachers know how it is to be so taken in by something you can’t leave until you understand it. If they haven’t been there then they have seen it with there siblings.” However they did get up and start walking.
Samantha said. “That is another of the hundred things I find strange. I am sure I will adjust in time, but right now I am still expecting to be yelled at for being late.”
Edith shook her head. “This school is a bit more relaxed then most do to that fact that we all have Adsons and so there are times we just have to rest. It is an adjustment, we all come in expecting to have to apologize every time we are late. Yet most of the teaches don’t even acknowledge that you are late, unless it is to give you a hand out you missed. Now Mr. Robbles will, but that is because it gives a break from the lesson and most of them are just plain silly.” Samantha nodded, but was a bit shocked it was a big change to hear the laws called silly so openly for all most would agree a number of them were it was not something that anyone said. First and for most was that the wisdom of the leads and especially the Emperor was not to be quested as they earned their rights when they saved everyone from the madness of the Tinkers. For all it was a century since that last war. Some of the laws hadn’t been changed in that time and the others were said to steam from the visions of the first savors, recorded in the books only the family could read.
Erin opened the door and they lead her into the room Mr. Robbles looked up and smiled. “Mike doesn’t look as worn out this time. So where did he fall?”
Samantha flushed a bit but Mike just laughed, and headed to a desk, Samantha took the empty one next to them, still a bit unsure. “Luckily walking over with Samantha meant that she I remembered to rest so that I didn’t have to be picked up this time.”
Mr. Robbles smiled. “Thank you Samantha it is a help if he is spared at least one fall a day. He does have a habit of ending up on the floor every other break this year.”
Mike said. “I can’t help it that the halls keep growing. I only had to be helped up three times today so I am getting better.”
Mr. Robbles shook his head. “Now Samantha I am sure they told but just to be clear it is fine to play a game on your phone and laugh. Text your friends, anything you think will help you get though this. The lessons are set by the government and it is a bit dull and ninety percent irrelevant, likely all a repeat for you as well. Today is worse yet as I must tell you all how magic is a myth and then list all that means.” Erin started laughing and after a bit so did the others. It was just a bit much. Samantha looked at them a bit shocked and more so as Mr. Robbles just nodded. “It is a bit much, I know, but it is what I am to cover. Now as I said now shout out any things I miss and we can see if they are on the list. Might be interesting to see what didn’t make the list.”
Samantha was a bit amazed at the class, there was so much open mocking going on in it. Then to they didn’t seem to think it was a big deal to admit they could do things on list of outlawed ability’s. It was one thing to see images of the altered beings that the government had labeled as mythical on items, but another to find them joking about the laws. Even one as silly as this one was. In truth the law agasr maicg made a lot more sense now then it used to, but that didn’t make it any less scary. Then there were the details in those files that she should never have seen. The others seemed to think they would try to use the gifts to expand the empire, but right now they didn’t need to. That might be long term but right now they just wanted to be able to create enough fear that any child with Adsons was turned over to the care houses. There they could see they either had control over them or they died in the testing. They still feared what the tinkers made, though she wasn’t sure why, or just what had caused the them to start making the changelings. However the scary thing was the Tinkers were not behind Adsons, no matter what was thought. The lab it was made in was an empire lab. The signature matched the fairies in cities but not the dragons. No matter what they might think. At least it didn’t match what she had seen in the lab, and it had been labeled Tinker, but well it was a testing center so it could well have been some government work. It was completely possible there had bean more then one verity of each changeling made. After all the history books even admitted that Tinkers were not the only ones that had the skills needed. That they were just the biggest. That does mean others could have been doing the same experiments. Which makes the isolation and testing a bit more scary. What if they are looking for a way to eliminate a certain signature and not the disease? Could they unravel all with a signature having found a way to target in one change? She shook her head. Now I am making up dooms day theories. Just what has gotten into me today?
It is a good thing he doesn’t expect me to be paying attention though likely I could repeat the lesson. Mr. Robles said. “All right so we have covered fire, next is telepathy which the define as knowing the thoughts of other people, or communicating your thoughts to them.”
Samantha blinked, that was a change, and looking at the list he hadn’t covered animal communication, but the rest was in the normal order. “Um, I think you skipped a bit. Communicating with animals always came before communicating with humans. Though just why I don’t know that is a greater crime never made sense. I always though that being able to influence the thoughts of others would be one of the high ones if they were ranking them biased on the harm that could be done.” She blushed, not having meant to say it, and waited to be yelled at. For that was out of line in multiple ways.
To her surprise he just looked at his papers and then said. “That’s odd. Your right animal communication should be there, but it isn’t even listed here this time. I wonder how they missed it. Well that is one more for the not on list, but it needs an asterisk for usually is. Good catch Samantha. Just how many times have you set though this nonsense?”
Samantha said. “Government instruction started in the first grade and we ran over the laws every year, then if there was time we had some other lessons on the first Emperor, but the laws were thought most important for use in the low schools. The history was thought to complex.”
He shook his head. “Well then I know who can take over when I get to laughing to hard. Our early classes focus on the history and the high school is laws. So some of this is going to be new to the others but all a often heard repeat for you. Feel free to point out any other variations. It will be interesting to see where the lessons differ.”
