41256 and off to camp
Devlin looked at her but before he
could ask there was a gust of wind and a large mountain rainbow mountain was
landing. He blinked. “Robin is going to be a bit upset as he was positive that
Stromcrow was Gold giving the name of the unit. Something about unit names having
to relate to the color of the captain’s bonded half.” He shook his head, glad
that he had his phone, for Robin would never believe this without a picture. “Some of the books at home did say that a few
rare dragons had two colors, but nothing about more than that. Little own a
rainbow, so do forgive me. I don’t mean to be rude. It is just that not ever
being around any dragons before I am amazed by the verity as much as by your
size.”
Stormcrow said. “No worries lad, we are
offended, truly you are doing far better than most do on a first visit. Even
those bonded find it hard the first time. Technically I am a gold dragon, due
to my claws, but few of you would know that. The naming has changed vastly in
the last hundred years. There are a number of mistakes in the books of your
land. In truth one color is only a common trait among young dragons. As we age
a second color will start to show, that is around the time most common for a
bond to form. However that isn’t always when they find you, as mine proves,
being a good three hundred years later.” He smiled, pleased to see that the boy
wasn’t running, for all he was a bit shaky.
Gale was right, it would be best to have him on Riverstone these first few
times, but it wouldn’t be long and he would be ready. He truly cared about her,
and wasn’t going to disappear, for all her life would change her.
Devlin said. “My brothers want to meet
you, and have asked me what you look like. They were not happy that I hadn’t
met you yet either. I am hoping the pictures will help a bit. Thank you for
letting me take them. I fear that I could never find the right words to give
them a fitting answer.”
Gale said. “Those should help, they
just need to do for a week then the dragons will start being seen on campus.”
Stormcrow nodded. “We try not to scare
the first years too badly, even here where dragons are seen more it can be a
bit to much to have a lot of us around. So we stay out of the way for a bit. It will be another week before I
pop in, but I will show up around one of the boys training times. For all it
might alarm a few, by that point they shouldn’t be freighted enough to do their
selves too much harm. Which they would be now, not being used to us popping in
yet.”
Sara smiled a bit. “True, but it would
be fun to see. Though best let some of the others do it first, Sir. So am I
raiding with Heather?”
Gale nodded. “Yes, but you will be
setting up your tent, both of you.”
Sara nodded. “I won’t have servants at
the hospitals after all, and there will be times when it will be needed. I have
put one up before. However I have no idea what to look at to know where the
tent should go.”
Gale said. “Trvais and Samatha will
help you with that. It will take you time to get it down, but it is something
everyone needs to learn. Yes I mean the riders as well as the new grounders.
You must all be able to set up your tents, as there will be times that we are
working apart from the ground crew. That is what it means to be in this unit! I
insist that we each function fully apart as well as one. So you will be taking
the lessons as well. Devlin you will ride with Joe, but Hank is going to be
helping you with your tent.” She had to shake her head a bit. It was silly, but
it truly did upset Hank that Vale had been seeing to him up tell now. There had
been a bit of an argument over the packing. As silly as it was, never mind that
Hank had mine to see to and Joe has Donald as well as Vale, so it would have
been easier for Vale to get Devlin it wasn’t fitting according to Hank. I am
going to have to find a second soon. It is getting out of hand. Hank was
already doing too much, but now he is really pushing it. Man but the politics. Hopefully
he will let Sharron and Beth help. “I just think you will feel better riding on
Riverstone these first few times. I love Storm, but he is a bit daunting. Hank
had been on Silversmith a few times and was still a bit shaky that first ride
with us. Though that might be related to how new everything was to me, the trip
to the school was the third time I had been on a dragon.”
Devlin smiled a bit, trying not to
look relived. “I fear I was a bit worried about getting on you Sir, having no
idea what I am doing. I will welcome Hank’s help, I just hope he won’t be to
upset with me.” I have to find out just how big of a deal it is that he is
insisting on seeing to me. It has to be important, more so where sis just has
the one seeing to her. He has to have a lot to do, yet is adding me into it.
Gale said. “Just say if you aren’t
sure about something and you will do better than most on their first trip. Go
on, Vale is waiting to help you into the saddle. Just give your bag to Hank, it
is his place to see it put with your other,”
Devlin nodded and handed Hank his bag.
“I do hope my camping gear wasn’t in big of a mess. I wasn’t planning on going
on a trip so am just sure that the gear was strung all over the apartment.”
Hank bowed. “I have seen worse sir.
You do need a few things, but you are better set than most new arrivals. I am
sure it won’t talk long to get it worked out.” He took the bag and went over to
put in the packs. Dev shook his head, took the hint and went over to Vale, and
soon they were in the air.
