Yuma entered the courthouse and waved at the guard, then
made her way to the prosecutor’s office, not even thinking about t. She had
been coming here all her life and knew the halls, had sat behind most of the
desks at some point. There was nothing the least bit scary to her here, but she
could kind of see why some would find the large building intimidating. For some
it was the last place in the world they wanted to see as all they knew about it
is that it brought them trouble.
She got to the office and the sectary waved at her. “Just go
on in Yuma. I am to tell you to take over the desk and relax, he has been
called into a meeting so is running behind.”
Yuma smiled. “Thanks Mark, I will do that. I have a few
dozen papers to finish.”
He laughed and nodded. “I bet you do, this close to the end of
the Semester I don’t know a student that wouldn’t. Go on and get to it.”
Yuma went on in and around the desk, then took her laptop
out and set it up, smiling a bit. John had left his on, likely for her, he generally
did if he knew she would be there. He had let her on it since she was eight,
and sometimes forgetting to log out. She had seen some files she shouldn’t have
but her father and him had just shrugged and said she was old enough. That was
how she knew of the exception for Healers in the magic codes, as well as more
then she should about how the detection of spells were done. Likely he would be
more than willing to let her see the classified files on the devil gene, if she
asked. That is if she couldn’t get them. She hadn’t tried but her laptop was
set so she could shut of the blocker to whatever leave her currant clearance was,
which she also had no idea. Passing the Civics test gave everyone more accesses,
depending on the score, but the right to turn off the filters was something
only a few would ever receive. She had passed with a high score and had received
Family backing, and it still was a shock when she had received her code. It
wasn’t something she had really expected to get for all Uncle Clive had her put
in for it. They seldom approved the requests, and she was still a minor. It was
last year even, way before she knew she would be graduation early. There were
only a handful of places that could install the kill switch, most had to send
the computes away for it. She just bet that Uncle Vern didn’t know Stinineg’s
was a government contract, she knew Tulip didn’t. Her Mother might, but wouldn’t
think of it. She thought her Father knew she had been issued the card, but she
wasn’t sure. There likely would be times she would want it off, both for trails
and personal research, one of these days she was going to have to find out for
sure just what her clearance was, but that would wait.
She took her phone out and sent a text to Joe letting him
know that her meeting was going to go over so there was no way that she would
make it to the study group, then set her phone on the desk and brought up the
paper. She didn’t hear it go off nor know when the office door opened until John
spoke and caused her to jump.
“What kind of computer do you have Yuma?” He had to smile as
she jumped. “That case is perfect, I bet your sister is mad about it. She seems
to be upset with dragons these days. Dare I ask what you are working on?”
Yuma said. “It is the new Rollings, Black fixed the case for
me. Tulip hasn’t seen it yet, but yes she and Uncle Vern would both be horrified
by it. I have discovered that Uncle Vern
full believes that all the magical beings are evil and should be avoided. That
even the symbols are asking for trouble. I am working on a term paper. I’m now
working on the cure, but am finding it a bit rough to get the information. Say
I know the sequester hasn’t been issued yet, but can I have a few books brought
here anyway? They are restricted, but not classified the librarian just feels I
don’t need to see the very pages I need to.” She looked at her phone and shook
her head. “Joe wants me to find out if we can possible still have study groups
once it is ordered. We would meet here of course. Two others from the group
have received letters for the trail.”
John said. “I think as long as there is a monitor it will be
fine, but I will check with the judge once the order has been issued. Give me a
list of books and I’ll get them delved, if you think of others just give the
list to Mark. That one will do you well, with the sat link you won’t have any difficulties
email even when you are at Oxford.”
Samuel said. “That case she has even came with the converter
she will need over there. That was well done by the time Mather realized that
you had said you were going she was so deep into the plans that she grateful
that you were going, not alarmed as she would have been. I do hope there are
some better apartments. Those two were bad. You need to show John that bright one
if you would, he says I was making it up.”
Yuma smiled and reached for her bag, to get the envelope out.
“It seemed the best way to get it out, and it did seem to help. I am still not
to clear just what it was a disaster of epic proportions, yet it clearly was.
Here it is, I still have to wonder if anyone actually lives in it.” She hand it
over then after a bit of hesitation hand her Father the one on the Dragon
House. He looked at it then at her. “I am waiting tell everyone is here as it
might help, but I so want to tell Uncle Vern that I will be living in a dragon.”
Samuel said. “This could have been made for you. It is far
better than those others. I am sure that he is going to be delighted to have
more to complain about. I do think he will be leave as soon as the Season is
over, that has to be the only reason he hasn’t left. He has to be seen, for all
he is worried at how badly you are influencing his dear children. Yes he has spoken
to me about it. Come on and we will show you where you are staying.”
She put her computer into her bag and stood up. “I am sorry
for I know it must be irritating you. I truly didn’t know he had such a large problem
with dragons. Since I found out I have been trying not to push him to much
about them. However, I am not going to do anything that might be seen as supporting
the new trend. It hurts everyone to limit people based on gender. All opinions
should be heard, no matter if that means you are seen disagree with the Male in
charge of the house. Likewise no one should deny a talent they have just
because someone declared it doesn’t fit their gender.”
John said. “I know, not only is it a waste of talent and resources
it is dangerous. The gap between classes s already too wide, this will increase
it. That turned will just feed the resentment that is being caused by those
saying that they just need to work harder.” He looked back at the flyer and
frowned. “I don’t get that decoration. Yet sadly I do know a few from my
college days who would have loved it.”
Samuel said. “I don’t want you to, nor do I want you to ever
support a view that you do not agree with, no matter who is supporting it. I won’t
say that the fights don’t get old, but it isn’t you that tends to start them. I
have no problems with you defending yourself in any fight. I thought you might
John, I am very glad that the others didn’t look beyond the colors. I kind of
want to know what the other rooms are like, yet I’m not sure I want.”
Yuma said. “I felt the same way and told the person I was
talking to at housing that I couldn’t see living there but was wondering what
the rest of the apartment was like. They said they will email some more
pictures of it and the building. I take it that there are worse decorations in
some of the apartments. One hallway has a picture of a daemon eating. The
person I was talking to said he didn’t get why anyone liked it, but it was one
of the popular buildings, there was a waiting list for apartments in it, and
most that got one stayed until graduation. There are some better pictures of
the Wing and the decorations around it as well as more of my apartment. I have
let them know that I want it, but that the papers wouldn’t reach them before January.
I also told the admittance off the same thing, so that should stop the offers
from growing. Not that I have any idea what more they could offer, I don’t want
to know either.”
