18700 so I'm adding words. have reached day 2
Sam started to stand, her mother shook her head. “Sam you stay put, Alice has been waiting for the last hour to bring your supper out to you. Don’t disappoint her. “ Sam shook her head a bit, but sat back in the chair, knowing it was more that they worried she was pushing to hard that had them bring supper to the living room. “Yes we must get to the library if they have that book then they are bound to have archers. Also there is a need of English teachers out here and so they will pay for me to take the year of schooling need to get my license and will give me a wage for taking the classes. I just went in to see if it would be possible to get in as an aid or substitute. They looked at my records and said that with a year of classes I would be licensed out here, and next thing I knew it was being set up. The University starts in two weeks, I will be going full time. I truly don’t know just how it was set up so fast. Do you think we can manage?”
Grant smiled. “That great. I didn’t even think about that, but of course your credits should transfer. Yes it will work just fine. This is a safe town so the children will be fine even if neither of us is here when they get home. They are all old enough now to be here alone for a bit. It is past time you were able to follow your dreams as well. Sounds like we had best see about getting at least one more computer when we go to the mall. You want to look at a laptop? With English classes you might find it helpful. I was going to price them anyway and see if it we could update what we have before it eats another term paper.” That caused some laughter. “Could be we will all be taking some classes. You know I think is going to help us feel more at home here, as it will give us a place to mingle.”
Seth came in with the plates and Tom was behind him with the TV trays, then Alice came in with three large boxes Seth and Alice set there loads, Seth went to help Tom get the trays set up, as did Max. But when Grant made to Seth shook his head. “We are seeing to supper tonight you get the night off. This way you can see we will be fine should your classes run late. All right so there is a bit of cheating, but you know that Alice can cook, so that isn’t in question. Say we get to tell you to do your homework now right? Max we can get this if you can help get the drinks?”
Max nodded and headed to the kitchen. Olivia said, as she sat on the couch, with Grant sitting down next to her. “You can tell us to as long as you are doing your own work. Now you are sure it won’t bother you that your parents are going back to school?”
Sam tried not to flinch as one of her brothers set the tray in front of her. Tom said. “Why would we? I think it is neat that you will have homework to do. You have always been a teacher and you should be in a class room where you can help more children like you do us. I am glad things are different here so you can be. Dad needs to learn more about the local plants. He always tries to get a few classes where ever we are. That you are broth enrolling helps as that means we are defiantly staying here for longer then three months. It will let us relax a bit. It is nice here but we weren’t to sure about getting used to it. Sam that is a stack of books, I can take the extras to your room for you after supper. Are they going to be calling to you sitting there? You want me to move them to the floor? Where did you pick them up at?”
Samantha blushed a bit. “Well most of them are my text books, the principal had them collected for me as well as a list of assignments so I would know where they are at when I start. Then he had book cases in his office and let me look at them. I stopped at the Homblurt but he added the Fishers astronomy as he had expect me to go for it not Homblurt, then he said this one would have details about the most common animals in the area so he thought I would like to read it. You all might want to look at it as well, it might help you identify those ones you were telling me about.”
Tom laughed. “Leave it to you to come home with all your text books and assignments before you even start classes. Yes I would like to look at that one on the animals. I was hoping to find some at the library. I hate not being able to name them, but yet I hate asking all the time what something is.”
Alice said. “So what are taking? Yes there is juice, but a small glass of soda won’t kill you. You need to try it, this is different then what we had back east. Just wait tell you see what the pizza is like.” She set the glass of soda on the tray then move to the boxes to start dishing the pizza for the boys to take around.
Sam shook her head a bit, she really didn’t care for the bubbly drinks, but they were caffeinated. “I have algebra, literary analyses, which will be covering fictional works, creative writing and astronomy. Then after lunch is something called Mythical studies, that won’t be starting tell the middle of next week, so is just study hall for now. There is no book for it even, so I still don’t know what it is, and the last half hour is the mandatory class.” Max brought her plate over and she just started at it. That was not like the pizza she had seen with some meat and a lot of cheese on it. There was a lot of stuff on it, things she had no idea what were. Three kids of meat, some peppers, some round black things, mushrooms. And she wasn’t sure just what.
Max smiled at her and said. “Now you see why we said it was time you had a real pizza. This is a supreme, so it has a lot on it, but nothing that you are likely to be allergic to.”
Alice said. “You have to tell Roger about the writing class and the astronomy, he is going to be upset that you got that book before he did. He will get it next year, if he is approved for the class.”
Samantha bit her lip, she did want to tell him, more so if he would take her video call, but was it safe. “Can I tell him? I mean those are class that it wasn’t fit for me to take and books I wasn’t permitted to see. So just what is it safe to say when talk to him or Grandparents? I don’t want to cause problems but I do want them to know just what I am up to, how I am getting along. That I can look at the books.”
Grant looked at Olivia as she followed the education laws so was more likely to know. She said. “The classes don’t exist out here and so their limits don’t. That is a good bit of why the west is viewed as uncivilized. They might be concerned that you are over extending your self, but there is no law being broken. Just don’t talk of any books you know are banned or of the changes in your medicines any more then you normally would and their will be no problems. If something should be said it can easily be taken care of by pointing out the differences in the law out here. There is no need for any of you to hide what you think of being here from us or from the relives still in the east. I can see why you might be worried Sam, but letting you take the classes is not braking any laws as those laws were set at state levels, it is just those in East adopted the same standards.”
Samantha nodded. “Good because I do want to tell him, even if it is a bit bratty of me to. Grandma is going to be upset over the writing class she happened to find one of my notebooks once and was very upset with me as there was a talking horse in one of the stories and in another there was some tree climbing, so they were showcasing uncivilized behaviors and it didn’t matter that I hadn’t meant for them to be read. Say when my legs are stronger can we send them a picture of me in that tree house?” Her parents started laughing and she picked up the pizza slice and took a careful bite then a bigger one. It was strange, but good. “This is odd but I like it. However sometime I want to try one with less on it so I can see what some of these thins taste like without the others.”
Grant said. “Oh the toppings will be around in other dishes as well so you will get a chance, but yes you will get to try less loaded pizzas. It is not just the schools and libraries that have no restrictions. Out here the only limits on what you can buy is the cost of the items. Business do not bar entry biased on class or Adsons, though some are geared to the wealthy. As to the tree house, yes as soon as you can safely climb the ladder you can start posing for and send pictures back east. I am sure Tom and Seth have already set a few of them in the house. Make sure you include some of you riding as well. They will be horrified but it will be better that we not hide it. Yes boys any animal you can pose with safely, but do make sure it is safe to touch first. Might as well let them see how uncivilized we are becoming by being here. Might just get a few of them to come join us, and should at least keep then from asking just what you are into.”
Olivia said. “Yes Tom, that means you get that new camera when we go shopping. Now not that fancy one, but one that will last and take good pictures. We are also going to look at a getting another computer for the house, but that might have to wait a bit. We are going to get Sam a cell phone so you all need to help her learn how to use yours. It is past time she had one, and Sam you are going to get one. I am not going to be talked out of it this time.”
Samantha shook her head, not seeing why she would need it, but knew it would be pointless to say so. They had been trying to get her to carry one for years, for all that was money that could be better used else where. “I truly don’t see why I would need one. There was like three times at the most that Max called you for me last year and only one of those did I ask him to. I truly don’t see the need even with me being in a different school, but as you both do I will see I have the thing with me once you get it. Yes that means I will pay attention this time when you show me how the things work. I drank that soda now can I please have some juice without those bubbles in it?”
Laughing a bit they got her a glass of juice and the talk drifted to other things. Once the pizza was gone Sam picked up one of the books as Tom and Seth traded the one with animals in it back and forth arguing over which ones they had seen until it was bed time.
Tom said. “You want any of those books taken to your room, Sam?”
Samantha said. “Yes, but they are staying out here so I will sleep and not read them. I am not well enough to stay up reading yet and I would try if the books were in my room.” Her dad nodded. “One of the new meds is likely to cause me to sleep more so don’t get worried if I am late getting up.” That should take care of it without admitting I am going to take a pain shot with out fighting. I don’t want them worried, but I am feeling the tests.
Grant nodded. “And don’t forget that extra pain medicine he said you were to take tonight, even though you hate it. He was clear that you would feel it in the morning if you didn’t and I don’t want you upset because you are moving less.”
Sam frowned, but nodded and stood up. “I remember what he said and no, I don’t need to be moving any slower or moss will start growing on me. Night all.” She started off to her room missing the look of worry on her brother’s face. She was moving slower tonight.
Grant said. “The doctor had her do a bunch of exercise and said she would be stiff tonight, but if she takes the pain medicine it should relax her enough that she will be over it in the morning. Yes she is pushing a bit hard, but she is also resting when she needs to, even if it isn’t as much as we wish she would.”
Samantha reached her room and entered it, still feeling odd about having it. they had given her the one closet to the living room, with a bath just off it. She was certain it was the ones her parents should have but they had just ignored her protests and it was true that by her having a private bath the others didn’t have to deal with the chair and grab bars she needed to be able to shower. This bathroom actually had them built in so there wasn’t the hassle of shifting things around to find something that would work. That was the rough spot every move, for there were always times it was to hard to stand and wash, but there was no way she could get out of a tube if she was to sit, just like she couldn’t stand up without help if she falls. Her legs just wouldn’t let her pull herself up.
Still it was just too much, it was lovely and yet she felt wrong to have it. For all they all had rooms of their own and she had been the last to arrive. There were no small rooms in the house, they all had closets that overwhelmed their clothes and beds that were sturdy, soft and big enough to hold more then one person. It was silly for her to be upset by it, but she just felt odd. She just was finding it hard to feel at home here then in the cramped apartments. Yet she loved it being here, it was just strange. She had to keep reminding herself it was real, that she didn’t need to feel guilty about having to be off the floor as they all had beds. No doubt the strangeness of it would pass, but tonight she was glad that the medicine would help her sleep, as would the pain medicine. As it had been harder to sleep the last few nights and it was likely going to get worse before it Imporved. With that she took her pills changed into her night clothes, got the shot and set on her bed. Glad she didn’t have to worry about anyone finding the needle before she could see to it in the morning. She gave herself the shot, mannered to set the needle on the stand by her bed and get her covers over her before the drugs carried her away.
Chapter two: A new day.
Samantha woke up slowly the next morning and blinked a few times, surprised not to feel groggy like the pain shot usually left her. It was a good change, not that she was going to start taking the things any more often. She had seen what it did to those in homes and there was no way she wanted to be dependant on the stuff. She sat up carful and when everything stayed in place she stood up. She had to move with care as the shoots had made her dizzy when moving a few times, and for all the new medicine was to help counter that it was still best to be safe. She carefully crossed to the bathroom showered and dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, which was all her closets held. She had five t-shirts and four pair of jeans, two which were not fit to wear out of the house, but the shopping trip was going to change that. She had been told that she was to get a minim of five new pairs of pants and shirts and one dress. Preferably more, and they were going to the mall not a thrift store. It was so odd to think of being able to go into a store, most were bared to them out east. The only ones she could enter were a few thrift stores or grocery stores, not even a book store, little own a place that sold new clothes. However that was tomorrow as they were going to spend the day there. Shaking her head a bit she left her room and started down the wide hall to the kitchen. Today she was to rest as the others were in school and then they would go to the town library after they were all home and get signed up for cards. The others had insisted that it wait until she was there so they would all see it together for the first time. It was impressive from the outside. It was all a bit silly, and she wondered how long it would take until she was able to stop checking for signs to tell her where to walk so as not to endanger those that feared Adsons could harm them, or pollute the uppers with her low class persons, for they shouldn’t be disturbed by the lower classes unless they had chosen to go among them. Those were the rules she had grown up with and it was hard to believe they were no longer there.
She entered the kitchen and sat down to rest a bit before going for her juice only to have it and a glass of water sat in front of her. “Morning sis, you are not that late, it is just a bit after seven. Do you need any of your meds? Your food will be ready in a bit.”
Samantha smiled. “Now I was going to get it, I just needed to sit a bit. Thank you, and no all the morning medicines are to be taken after I eat. I am on less now then I was before as they determined that a lot of them were useless do to the changes this last episode caused. I fear a lot about it baffled the doctors.”
Seth said. “I know you could, but I also know I was standing by the juice and could get it just as easy as you could. So what are you planning on today? You are going to do a bit more then read those books right?”
Samantha said. “I am going to go look at a bit more of the gardens, but not to much as I am rest. So yes a lot of the day will be spent reading, but likely out on the porch.”
Max said. “I will be here a bit after noon as for some reason I don’t understand the high schools just go half days on Fridays. Mike and Edith are coming over so we can go over the canes. I thought that would work as we won’t be going to the library until four anyway.”
Grant nodded. “That sounds good and Sam I will be coming by the stables in the afternoon so I can give you a ride back to the house after you make it there, so go ahead and try it. There are benches along the way so you should be able to make it there, and I know you want to see them. It isn’t cheating if I see you there and give you a ride back, you still made it their on your own.”
Samantha laughed. “Thank you, and I think I will do just that. I wasn’t going to try going that far, but I do want to see the horses I have heard.”
Olivia said. “Good that is settled now eat up, and I will take you into school as I need to fill out a few more papers for my classes and see just what I need to get for them. It is odd to be thinking of going back to school, but it will be good for me. So Sam you are going to have the house to yourself this morning so you needed worry about anyone popping in when you write Roger and tell him about that book.”
