Sally said. “You will find it adjustment, but I think you will like it. I have cousins out east and had to go see them last summer. I can’t believe how regulated everything is out there. I am so glad we are hoisting it next time. I am not looking forward to making another trip east anytime soon.” The boy had her shoe on and helped her to sand. “Thanks for the wrap it does feel better.” She reached for her bag only for the boy to take it. “I meant it you are not carrying this. We can get it for you until that new brace gets in. It is no trouble and you know it. You have helped me, so let me help you.” Sam smiled and stood up. “Glad I could help. It is not as trust worthy as a new brace, but should help a bit.” The boy frown a bit she truly didn’t look to steady. “Why don’t I help you out?” Sam shook her head. “Thank you, but Dad is just at the end of the walk. My balance is wobbly but moving helps it.” She hoped that sounded all right and not as panicked as she had felt at that offer. It was hard enough to have people she knew touch he, as her skin was so tender. The doctor she was heading to would be enough contact from a stranger. She moved to the door, hoping to stop an answer. The boy smiled. “Another one who feels you must do it on your own. Fine, but I will be taking your books from you next week.” He laughed and Samantha managed to as well, but was glad when she was outside. It was going to be a bit rough for the fist weeks, that was clear. Still she was smiling when she made it to the car and sat down. “It is strange not to see the divisions I’m used to, and to not have any of them looking at me like I’m going to turn into a monster. I don’t know what I expected. I just. It is going to be so different not to worry that I will talk to someone I shouldn’t.” Grant nodded a bit. “I think you will be happier at this school, but it is going to be an adjustment. Your books are in the middle there. It is about to minuets to Dr. Brooks office in Forks so that will give you time to look them over. He needs to check and make sure the heart monitor your have is working the way it should be. The papers said they used the right one, but he wants to make sure it didn’t get miss reported.” Samantha looked at her dad clearly startled. “He said? You mean? But they never admit that the papers are wrong. That is too much like admitting they bill for things they don’t do. Just what?” Grant nodded. “And he is not in a government office, those is approved for the heart. The work he will be doing with your Adsons is not government approved, but he is trained and the government doctor is fine with signing his records. As there is only one Government listened Doctor for every sixty paicentis, they will openly admit they don’t see half the people they do on paper. They have no problem laughing at the rules or ignored the mandated treatments, even as they say on paper they were given. I meant it when I said you would recover out here. The folks are going to be amazed at just how well you are doing, though we will likely have to go east to see them, you will be able to. It will likely take a bit of invent paperwork, but Dr. Brooks said you weren’t the only person he saw that had to relatives in the east and he knew how to make it work. I just want you to know you can tell him the truth about your medicines, as I know you didn’t but half hear us talking about them at the school.” Samantha was just staring at him. To agree that the regulations might not be right was to risk your practice and jail time. Forging papers would defiantly get you jail time, and in this case it was unlikely the Doctor could deign knowing. It would be good to have help with getting doses that didn’t leave her fogged or seeing triple, but it was imposable to believe. “I know how hard it is to believe, but I promise it is safe, I checked and tripled checked everything before setting the appointment. I am sure you can get some help, and they know that they need to be carful when touching you. Turns out it is common with some forms Adsons, and there is a treatment that might help a bit. Now go on and look at those books.” It was late that evening when they made it back to the big stone house. Samantha looked up as the car came to a stop and still found it hard to believe that she was home. She wondered if she would ever get used to it. It was amazing to think they lived in a house, and one so large. Only the very wealthy had house in the cities, they were the unmanly luxury. There were in most cases only a dozen single family homes in each city. There just wasn’t enough space. Apartment buildings were a better use of space, the better you were the more room you could have. The middles builds had two or three apartments per floor, the Uppers had only one, but the lows could have anything. There were a few whose top floor was just or two apartments and some buildings that were full of small one room places that just barely held a bed and stove, with a bath down the hall. It could be a mess, luckily they had always had at least a two bed room place, even though some were so cramped that a singled bed filled the bedrooms. Still it was a big change to have this large house with three baths and six bedrooms all to their selves. There was just so much space, more then even an upper apartment would have. There was just so much more space here, where they weren’t confined by fences. Still it was a bit above what they should have, but house was a part of the pat and so it was the employer that set it. It wasn’t unheard of for them to raise an employ’s standing, but it was rare out east. It was so hard to remember that such things no longer mattered. Grant said. “Max you want to get Sam’s books for her? You might need to let her know she’s here. I haven’t heard a sound from her for the last twenty miles. I have the groceries, she did nod at me when I went into the store and aging when I got back into the car. Was something found for supper?” Samantha laughed and opened her door so she could hand the books to Max. “I’m not that bad, I looked up when the car stopped. You told me to stay in the car, and the doors were locked so I knew it had to be that opened them, even if I didn’t notice you coming back to the car. I can’t help it if these are all books I wasn’t allowed to even see the spine of, little own touch. Max I am going have Astronomy and creative writing! Can you believe it? They said I could! Even have me in a class that covers fictional writings! I mean real stories not the propaganda dressed stories, but things just purely made up. Mr. White said there were no restrictions on what I was award to read. That I could look at any of the books, but he would make I not that I would need to be remind of them. I just. Well it is unbelievable.” Max smiled and took the books then he saw the top one, and looked at her then their father. “How? This book is like number six on the list of the most disrespectful works. All copies were destroyed on sight. Just how, where?” Samantha said. “That is one the principal loaned me. He said most libraries here have it. I couldn’t believe it, but it is what it says. I guess there is some exemption in place that saved all the old banned books out here. He just had it out with the rest of the books. Truly didn’t seem to see why it was such a big deal. Yes you can read it to. Just know it is a bit wordy, but just seeing a bit of it makes it clear it wasn’t as sick as they made out. I do hope I can find some of the others as well. It is so interesting to see the truth of them, even though I know better then to say anything. Oh and they did lie about my hear monitor, but what they used will work better here then what they said they did. That next one there he said covered the animals most commonly found in the area, so you might want to read it to.” There was nothing shy about her here as she knew she was safe. In public she had to worry about appearing to know too much. It was hard to remember what wasn’t safe for her, so it was easiest not to talk at all. Not that they would let her get by with that, but she did her best to limit what she said to the least needed. Or had done so. She would have to talk more here, but it looked like it might be safe to do so. Still it was a worry. As they started to the house she remembered the phone numbers. “My cane was well liked, and I was asked where I got it. I have a sample image and some phone numbers for you from two who want to know if you would paint one for them. I think you will like what the boy wants, he said it was just a rough sketch but he had a better one he can bring you. The other one says her brother needs to do some work on setting up a small business and that if you want he can help you, and if you’re not interested you could like help him any way if you would answer some questions about expenses. I’m not sure I followed that right but well I’m sure if you call they can explain.” Max looked at his sister and shook his head. “Come on there is a chair on the porch, you can find the papers for me there. I don’t think it is just me he wants to call. After all they gave you their numbers Sis. You need to watch those boys.” She didn’t believe him, of course, she never did. No matter how many time he told her it wasn’t just because of him and Roger that the boy were there to help her. That was what troubled him, she was likely to encourage a boy and not mean to. He saw to it that the ones at East knew she wasn’t meaning to flirt, but he would know the ones at here. Yet it would do her good to be on her own. She needed to learn that she could do more then sit and be quite which was what the east was teaching her she was meant to do. Here it looked like she would have a chance to learn what she wanted and go for it, not being held back by Adsons or some silly ranking system. Samantha laughed, as Max expected. “Dad told them to write down there numbers so you could call them, and I should be able to make it in the house. Mike was brought into the conversation as a way to try and put me a bit at ease after I basically fell into a chair in the front hall. He had to be helped off the floor not long before I reached the chair. So his admiration of the cane wasn’t just an excuse to talk to me. No matter what you want me to think.” Grant winked at Max. “No, he does like the cane, however it wasn’t just the cane that boy liked.” Samantha shook her head. “Now then Max you didn’t say was something found for supper?” Max said. “We ordered pizza. It is time Sam had a real pizza anyway, and there was a special on so it was actually less then it would have cost to cook our own. Now did the doctor change the diet?” They reached the porch and their mother had the door open, so heard them. Olivea said. “You don’t need to monitor what your sister eats, she is more then old enough to take care of it her self.” Samantha ignored the chairs on the porch and made for the door, causing Max to frown a bit. He wished she wouldn’t push so much, it was easy to see her legs were hurting. “More caffeine not less, and stay away from diet foods but don’t over do the sugar. None of my meds have any dietary restrictions now as he changed two of them, but otherwise agrees with how I have been taking them. He said that the government doc was nuts to expect me take the medicines the way he had directed and yes that would make me sick. Turns out that two of the ones I wasn’t taking had ingredients I was allergic to. I am to call him if I have any side affects or any questions.” She sat down in an arm chair, not to far from the door. “He gave me his personal number, he truly intends for me to him. It was strange. He talked to me and ignored Dad. I have had pizza before. After all it was one of the three things Shannon could cook. Or have you forgotten? Max if you hand me the books I will get the sketch out, no reading until after supper, I promise. Some are the school books. Mr. White had them get me the books and assignments so I won’t be too lost Monday. He offered, truly. Max I told you I could make it to the chair now stop frowning. It isn’t that much further than the other chair, I took the closets one.” Max shook his head but handed her the books then froze. “As you have been? You told him you changed? But that. Just what?” Samantha said. “He is only governmentally licensed to see to my heart issues, but is treating my Adsons as well. Therefore it clearly wasn’t an issue to tell him I was braking the rules. However the folks out east don’t need to know about the new medicines. I know one of them is illegal, I’m not sure about the other one, but he was sure it would help and knew more then the other doctors.” She sorted through the books and found the papers, and handed them to Max. Grant said. “I told her before we went in that she was to be completely honest with him. They have a different way of treating Adsons out here and it is worth exploring. Lord knows what we had was doing more harm then good. That is why your aunt Ruth was yelling at me she knew that coming out here Samantha would go even farther off the approved course. I do think she will come around as she sees that Sam is not being harmed. It is going to take longer to get my folks and Roger convinced we are not going to get killed by some untamed disease making animal, but I think we will be able to. Now then I am hungry even if you aren’t. So Max you can call them after we eat and set a time to meet, it is indeed likely you can count on sale some canes out here. There were some wild ones in being used in the doctor’s office, so it wasn’t all just a way to get Sam to take the phone number. Which reminds me. Max if you haven’t done so please show Sam how to use that phone, we will be getting her one when we take her to the mall Saturday, so she needs to know how to use them. It is past time you had one and yes you do need it. that way you can let use know if you are going to be late or if a location for a group project gets changed. After all Max won’t be there to call for you this year. Did you know that the historic items exceptions applied to books? Turns out that there are a number of burn on sight books that can be found out here. One of those that Sam brought from the school is a real copy of Homblurt’s work, I bet you will find the library has some of those titles you couldn’t find, so we had best go see about cards tomorrow, even with Sam having those to read.”
