Day 2 2444 they made it to the office
Grant said. “There are some mistakes in the hospital records that need to be addressed. The records department didn’t seem to agree with the doctors. It was a bit of a mess.” That was the thing about the government hospitals, the offices were over staffed but the floors were understaffed. Still the last one was better then the first one. At least they had more controls in place to see that the medicines she had been given were the right ones. Those three weeks before Fields was able to get her stable enough to transfer to Palmer’s intensive care were bad. They gave her the wrong medicines six times and three of those were ones she was allergic to not that it wasn’t understandable there was at least fifteen patients for each nurse and the doctors were even busier. Still they had put it on the door of the room that she was allergic to four of the most used ones and yet three had made it into her one and one had been administered to her.
Steven saw the troubled look and wondered just what had gone on. “That is common. We just used the bits about Samantha’s education and took down her allergies from them and was waiting to go over the medications. Just let me get a new poster up and we can go see about it.”
Samantha smiled. “Sounds good, by then my leg should let me make it. I will be so glad when they get over this. They have done it after every reoccurrence I can remember, but this one seems to be taking longer to recover from. Might just be that I am more aware of it.” Steven looked at her a bit odd, but nodded and went after the poster, but that look made her realize that a bit had been left out the medical reports as well.
A red head girl sat down in the other chair. “So your third as well? I am so glad I am though the last one. It is good to have it over with. I’m a level four, you?”
Samantha looked at her wondering how to answer that. Just what was she talking about? “I fear I have no idea what you mean about levels. If you mean relapses then no, it was my sixth that required hospitalization, though there were two other minor ones that just need bed rest at home.” The girl and Mike looked at her shocked. “However you might have a deferent understand of what that means out here then I learned growing up in the east. We were in Kansas when I was born and moved here from Mane, with a dozen other moves in between. Out there being in a relapses means you have a seizure that is accompanied by disorientation, officially. However in practice if they see one that looks like Adsons then the ambulance is called and you will be labeled as being out of remission, as long as there is not another in twenty four hours you are sent home. I was just counting the times I had three in the first twenty four hours, and was in bed for a week or more. The ones I was at home for there was just two more in that week, the others there would be at least one a day for the first week, likely more.” They were looking worse not better she looked at her father, wondering what the problem was.
Mike said. “They must treat it different out East. We don’t see that many hospitalizations or relapses out here. Here we are in an active state when we have four seizers in a week or one seizure that lasts more than three minuets, anything less is believed to not need any medical attention. The most serve forms typically require three hospitalizations, some few need a fourth, before it stabilizes. Meaning that as long as the blood tests are done and treatment programs followed the person can expect to have no more then one seizer a week, but most will see less. Which I am guessing doesn’t happen out East.” Sam shook her head not able to understand it. It sounded like Adsons was milder out here, but that wasn’t what the experts said. It was supposed to be more problematic, there was a denser concentration of people with it out here. Perhaps that had led to a greater acceptance of it or something. It made no sense.
Grant said. “The East uses Homerbalt to put the Adsons into remission, which researcher is showing prevents it from reaching the stabilization you see in it. However even given that there is a big difference in how it is handled out here. There are four classifications for Adiosns out east. Mild means the genes were found in the tests, but no seizers were seen before the person reached sixteen, moderate the person had the first seizure between the ages of twelve to sixteen, medium the first seizer occurred between six and twelve, server is anyone that had there first seizure before the age of six. Samantha had her first document seizure when she was two weeks old.”
The girl said. “If they are using that junk it explains a lot. It is against state law to use it here. It just made everything worse. All it does is suppress the changes that Adsons makes there by making a person sicker then they would be if the sydrorm is allowed to follow its course. So when was you last dose? I fear you are like going to have a rough time when it wears off, but dad might be able to ease it a bit if there is time for him to scare up the right things. Been years sense they were needed so it will take a bit, but I can get him started. Oh, I’m Edith Lighster, my dad is Aimus Lister, the town Doctor, incase you haven’t met him yet.” Samantha blinked, trying to think if that was that name of the doctor she was to check in with or not, but Edith did give her time to answer. “See when it run you will have one to possibly four times when you have daily seizures for roughly a three week space, then they will tapper off. It is those times that we say the dieses is active. There are tests that can tell you which you are and that is where the leaves come from. Most common are ones, least seen is fours, I think there is something like twenty know to be alive. Most in this school are threes but there are a few that are on the border between two and three. That is there tests were to close to call, so it is a wait and see but if they haven’t had a third by the time they are seventeen then it is safe to say they won’t. There are some for each leave that get caught like that. However where you have been given that other junk the slandered tests will do no good. I think it raised you a level as well, but I’m not to sure.”
Samantha blushed a bit. “I was in the hospital so long this last time as the Homerblat didn’t work. I had too many doses of it and all it did was make my heart race for an hour, then stop. After three tries they gave up on it. I was just found safe enough to be released three weeks ago, and then it took special permits for me to be able to travel as I couldn’t be put into remission. The last dose of Homerblat was administered in May, but there was no trace of it in the blood work by the next day, hence they determined it was ineffective and started trying to get me stable enough to move to a hospital that handles such cases. I have the misfortune of being allergic to all the normal medicines, just to make thing even more of a challenge.” She hoped they weren’t to scared. They weren’t looking it, nor had they moved away, like the others did. It was strange not see the fear, even the nurses and the doctor had shown it these last months and that was why her folks had to move so far to find a job this time. they would get one lined up, but then would have to tell them they had two children with Adsons one of whom wasn’t responding to treatment and suddenly there were others better qualified for the job. Though it was Roger that told her, as he was trying to get her to agree to go to a home. Dad hasn’t said if he has heard from him yet or not. I know he refused to come west.
Steven was back and hung the poster wish he knew what to say so Samantha would relax. No one here was going to run from her, yes she was more affected then the others but most of that was because of the drugs she had given. Each time Adsons is surprised it grows stronger and rewrites more code. She had been just about as over medicated as Lord Herderson, in fact it would likely be best to see if he could give an advise. Her gifts were likely going to be as strong as his, meaning it was going to be a bit tricky for her to learn how to control them. He smiled at them. “There now to see how long this one will last. So Samantha do you feel up to walking? No rush now, you will see we are not too worried about time here. It is normal to find students or teachers using the chairs. I only get worried if they are empty.”
Samantha smiled and stood up, then nodded. “The leg feels good, so I should be able to make it.”
Mike smiled at her, she was looking a bit less ready to run. Just what were those cities like? “Say where did you get that cane? I can’t find any I can stand to be seen with, but that looks promising.”
Samantha said. “My brother painted it. He said that this one would have to do for now, but that he is fixing a better one. Which I must confess has me a bit worried. If you have an idea of what you want and a cane I a sure he would be happy to give it a try. He loves painting anything.”
Mike said. “Cool I have an image I would like and can get a cane if he says he will look at it and see.”
Edith said. “Better tell him he is likely to find himself with a lot of canes to paint. I know a bunch here that would be interested, and it will grow as it gets seen. I know my Grandma would love something different the plane one she has. If he wants I can get my brother to help with prices so he can get a bit of spending money from them. He needs to draw up papers for a small business and so it would help him even if your brother doesn’t want it. He will need to talk to him about expenses and that for the papers, I think. Would he be willing?”
Samantha blinked try to sort that out, still a bit shocked the seemed willing to accept it. “I will ask him tonight, but I am sure he won’t mind. If you have a copy of what you want I can take it now.”
Grant said. “If you want to give us your numbers I am sure Wall will call you to set up a time to meet as soon as he hears you are interested in it. There really is no danger of him saying no. He has wanted to do something like this for years, but had no way to get any interest in it. He will be glad to hear that there might be some out here that want them.” Yes this was going to be good for them. They all needed to learn what it was like to not be looked at with fear. It was strange out here, but all of them were looking better and it had just been a few weeks. Both of the kids had written down there numbers and handed them to Sam before he had finished speaking. Clearly they did need to get Sam a phone soon, no matter what she said, she was going to stand out more without one.
Mike said. “This is sort of what I was thinking, but I can get him a better image latter, if he thinks it will work.”
Samantha took the papers and blinked a bit, she had thought they would just give them to her dad. “I will see he gets this and I think he will like this Mike, it looks some drawings he has on his walls.
Steven said. “Not to worry he will find a lot of interest around here. There is a big market for custom canes. Now if you just follow me we can get the papers started. When do you think you will be up to starting classes?” He started walking, but made sure not to go to fast and kept an eye on Samantha as he could tell she wouldn’t say if he was going to fast.
Grant said. “We are planning on Monday, if all goes all right in between now and then. She just got out here to days ago and the air is different so we need to be sure it won’t cause any new issues as well as get in a meeting with the local doctor and some shopping.”
Steven nodded. “That sounds fine ad I will see you have the books and assignments when you leave, Samantha, that way you can be on the same page. I am just betting it is bugging you to have to miss any of the school year. Of coues the list you have was mostly made from guess so likely it will have to change a bit. Now then right past this hideous gold door. I have no idea what the story is behind it, but I know there has to be one.” They laughed and he relaxed as they did. clearly they were used to rough treatment and gritty schools, they both clearly felt out of place yet were trying to hide it.
