2 days of writing with head cold 3451
Samantha walked over to the book cases still a bit guilty, but he had told her it was fine, and she just had to look. It was strange but she had never been able to resist a book. Something her siblings used to get her to come out when she was mad and trying to hide from them. It was so strange to be able to look at any of them and not have to worry, and he was really going to let her take a class on writing! She had wanted to, but knew that it was not fitting and so had never even asked. For all she had hidden notebooks full of stories and a few essays, though a lot of those she had been able to give to the sibling whose book she had read incase they could use them. A few however were to controversial as they questioned the experts and a few proved them wrong.
She moved all the books looking at the titles and wondered what it would be like to be able to say openly that Helmer was a fool, bears didn’t cause colds, that it was proven that some animals might be able to carry some micro organisms they didn’t create them. It was shocking to think that out here they might just say such things, not just think them. Clearly they didn’t care as much out here as he had Dawin’s work setting out in the open, that was one of the books her dad kept in the back room. It was legal for him to have it, but not for us to see it. Not that it stopped me from reading it. Say that is Homblurt’s treaties on the natural order. Falkner said that all copies had been destroyed as it was now consider a bigger hearsay then the theory of evolution. That one needs to be looked at closer. She had taken it off the shelf and was headed back to the chair with it even as she was still processing the fact it was there. She was vaguely aware they were going over her medicines but was too interested in the book to hear them.
Steven said. “Samantha I know that you likely won’t want to say but I need to know if there is any differences in how you are truly taking your medicines. It is important I know it as that way I can have some idea what you might be having a reaction to should a problem develop.” He looked puzzled when there was no answer.
Grant looked over at her and smiled. “She isn’t hearing a word we say right now and won’t until we can get her to put down that book. That is why it is so dangerous to let her around them alone. Even if she started out in the right area once she finds one she loses the world around her. Truly if she was to wonder into the wrong area at her age she would be arrested and likely sent to one of the homes. When she was younger mistakes were tolerated, that is she would be give a work assignment, but it was better to just tell her she couldn’t go alone. Some place we had to live it wasn’t safe for her to be alone any place. She is going to be lost out here. It is going to be hard for her to believe she isn’t bound by those limits. Being here is going to help all of us, but it is a big change.” He sat his hand on her arm and she jumped and looked up guiltily. “It’s fine dear, Steven just needs to know if you have cut back on any of your medicines more then I know about. So what did you find?”
Samantha blinked. “Um did Max tell you I stopped the Gramaden? That is the only change that I didn’t tell you. You were busy last night and I forgot this morning. It made me fuzzy, so I want to see if I can go without it. It didn’t bother me before but after I took it yesterday morning I felt like I was stuck in syrup. You were on the phone so Max said to skip it and he would see you knew. He some how has a copy of Harrblurt! See? I can’t believe I am really holding it. They were all destroyed in the great cleaning, but here it is. I am sure it is real, I have matched one of the quotes and it is so much less upsetting in context, as I expected. Yet, well. Mr. White did you know that this book is banned? If it is found it is worth a maximum penalty. I should have just told you, but I just had to look at it.”
Garnt looked at her shocked. “What? How is that? I couldn’t even find a rumor of it. Just how?”
Steven smiled. “Luckily we were granted an exception to those rules for historic book, you will find that work in most libraries out here. I am surprised you find it interesting, most tend to find he is a bit wordy.” It was going to be easier then he had thought to handle the medicines that would be a help. Though getting her past the shock of breaking the law would be harder then it was with most students here. “You can take that with you, just return it when you have both read it, and no I won’t care if another leaves with you. However I am sure you will find more in the library as well. Don’t worry I will see there is someone who knows to remind of the time when you are there, Samantha. Grant I am sure that the Universty library will gladly let you in, but the town library will have a lot of the works as well. I don’t have many on the earth sciences myself, but you will find a lot more freedom here.” He hoped they knew he truly didn’t mind was just startled with her choice.
Samantha said. “It is dense and he could have phrased it better, but is fainting to see just how his words were changed. Have you Jophes treatise on the dangers of nature? That is all we ever see of Harrblurt out east, and in truth I never should have even seen that. I was in a group that was judge to impressible for works of that type, I was not to read anything but the laws on the subject of the natural world. Well that and the horror stories of the plague, which I was to take as being the full story. It is so strange to even be aloud to openly see the books little own read them.”
Grant said. “I have an appointment to talk to the University about starting work on my doctoral degree again, so I will defiantly see if they will let me have library access even if that won’t work. I hadn’t realized that the deal on pre existing works applied to those on the banned list. I know my Wife will be heading to library as soon as she hears that to see if she can find some she has been want to read. Sam loves words, and there are very few books she won’t read even if she finds them ridicules, however anything at all to do with animals gets her full attention, likely as she has been so kept from them.. Sam you had best mark your place for now and wait until we are back at the car.” Samantha blushed a bit but nodded and used the cover to mark her page then closed the book.
Steven stood up, “Nancy should have the books and assignments ready for you. Now you are not expected to turn in any of the work that was assigned before you start classes, I just thought you would want to know where they were at in the books.” He walked over to the shelves that Samantha hadn’t made it to and took down two books then brought them over to her. “These need to go with you as well. this is the one I expected you to pick up, as I saw you had expressed an interest in astronomy but been refused the class, by the way you are in one now.” she looked at him stunned, then at the book and her moth opened and then shut. It was clear she liked it, but didn’t know what to say. Then he handed her the second one. “It is basic but will tell you a bit about the animals you are most likely to encounter here.”
Samantha smiled and nodded. “Thank you sir. I have been. Roger did get me a scaled down version of this book, after a lot of grumbling. To be able to see the full one is more then I ever expected once I learned that Astronomy was not fit for me. I didn’t realize that wanting to know more about the movement of the stars and planets would alarm anyone, but I received extra classes on proper behavior and remaining in my place that year. As asking had lead then to believe I was trying to learn things that would harm me. Not that anyone ever explained how it would harm me, but I knew better then to ask that even when I was just starting school. Luckily my parents saw that I knew that what I read at home was not too talked of, even when I was to young to know It is just hard to believe that I really can explore things that I was to stay away from as I was to low to be trusted with them. It is hard to fathom how different it is out here..”
Steven nodded. “I can see that and likely we are all going to get surprised by those difference for a time, but it will be good for us. Now then let’s get those books, as I am sure you have a busy day seeing as how you just got in town there has to be a number of things you need to do.”
Grant smiled and flowed him out to the sectary’s desk where there was a bundle of books waiting. “And you have a dozen tasks we are keeping you from, but you are to kind to say so. I thank you for your time. It has helped us both a good deal. It is one thing to read and be told that Adsons is not viewed as alarming out here but another to see it. To see that you can see the person not the illness. That is going to be just as odd for us, for all we did what could to see that Samantha knew her Adsons didn’t define who she was the society back east was telling her and us the opposite. Sam I know you don’t want to, but I had best take those to the car, but yes once we are there you can have them.”
Samantha nodded. “I have enough to deal with just walking without trying to read as I do it and I know I would try if I had the books. I think it would likely be best if you brought the car closer. I just don’t think I can make across that gravel again. It takes more out of me then I thought it would to avoid slipping on it. I am just not good on rough surfaces yet.”
Grant relaxed a bit he had been trying to find a way to ask her to wait as he brought the car over. “Sure thing, if you want to just wait on the bench out there I can get it.” They left the office to find the hall fuller and a lot louder then it had been. “Must be class change,” He looked back at Sam who was looking at the students in the hall. She wasn’t looking to stressed, which was good.
Sam nodded a bit. “It will be different without Max or his buddies watching out for me, but this looks manageable. I don’t see the shove matches going on that East had, which was why I needed help there. It is not like I have to worry about changing the side of the hall I am on as well as making my way past the people. With all here having Adsons they are not as likely to get upset if I should happen to bump into them.” She wasn’t sure who she was trying to reassure, but at least it seemed to help her to say it out loud. The first weeks were going to be hard, but she would make it.
Steven said. “The school can be hard to navigate so you will have help the first few days, but I promise there are no wrestling matches allowed to happen in the halls. Bumps do happen, but no one is going to take offence over it, we all know what it is like to have balance issues. Those helping you will be able to answer the other questions you are going to have as well, though likely they will have some of their own. The east is a big mystery to us.”
Samantha said. “All we here of the west is that it a wild place, not fit for civilized people, I imaging you don’t hear much more about the east. I will be happy to answer what I can. The gangs would have tussles in the hall, and that could spill over to others, then some were scared of those of us with Adsons so we were to stay to certain areas to prevent problems.”
He looked at her, not liking that. No wonder the child looked haunted. “So insisted of education them about what Adsons is they built up the rumors that it could be contagious. That is just. Well I can already understand a bit more why we would be feared. You will find it a big adjustment out here, but I hope you will all come to feel at home. I look forward to seeing you in the halls Samantha. Sorry to have to run, but I am substituting for the history teacher this class.”
Grant nodded. “Go right ahead, we fully understand. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. It has helped a good deal. So I know you don’t need me to but I will better seeing you to the bench and then I will go get the car.”
Samantha nodded, relived she did get a chance to tell him to go ahead, as she really didn’t want him to. The hallway wasn’t as crowed as she was used to, but the move tide did make it a bit hard on her. she had been have problems following moving objects for the last few months, it was getting better, but it didn’t help her balance any. The students were walking with a clear purpose but they were missing the urgency that the halls would have in east. so they must have more time to get to their next classes then what students were permitted in the east. Also there was no fear and far less separation. There were clicks, of course, but they weren’t as distinct as they would be in an eastern high school. Especially where this school had students from all over the city.
Samantha’s legs start shaking as she reached the door. “Dad I need to sit.” He nodded and turned a bit to row of chairs. She stopped at the fist chair and sat, glad they were there. She looked out the door and eyed the walk to the driveway “I should be able to make from here to the car if you want to leave me here, and bring it over. I should be out the way here.”
He looked at her a bit worried, but she was safe here and he need to get used to letting her be on her own, she was seventeen not seven and should have the same chances the others had. It wasn’t right how they had guarded her and kept her away from the world, even if it was needed. “All right then, but don’t push it, I’m sure they won’t mind if the car is sitting there for a bit should the walk grow.” He left, pretended not to notice the slight trembling. It would be good for both of them, and he needed to see she did some shopping on her own before Monday as that would make it easier as well. It had to be troubling her more than she was saying to know she would be without any of her siblings.
Samantha sat there watching him for a bit then turned to watch the students, looking for the separation that wasn’t there. It was so odd, even the clothes were different, brighter somehow. As she was watch one girl stumbled, she jumped wanting to help, yet scared of getting involved. That fear held her in place, waiting for the yelling that always came. However to her shock the boy just grabbed the girl and helped her to one of the chairs close to where she was. It was strange the boy was so clearly in a different societal class then the girl, yet he seemed concerned not upset. Sam blinked a bit trying to get her brain to accept what her eyes were seeing.
The boy said. “Just sit here a bit Sally, did you leg give out or was it that load of books you insist on carrying?”
The girl, who was apparently Sally, said. “It felt almost like my brace came undone, but I checked it before I left class.”
He nodded and knelt down and started taking the shoe off. “I will take a look at it, and then you are going to let us help you with those books until your new brace gets in. at this rate you are going to get hurt if you don’t. That is the forth time this week that I have caught you, and I know Grant has caught you twice. You don’t need to be carrying those books when you aren’t stable on your legs.” He had her shoe off and shook his head. “This brace is shot, your new one had best get here soon, or won’t be walking.”
Sam was digging thru her bag and came out with an ace bandage. “Excuse me, but if you wrap this around the brace sir, it will hold better.” The both jumped and looked at her. “We often had to make do with recycled braces at home, so learn a few tricks to make them work.” She blushed realizing she was rambling, and just held the bandage out.
The boy took it and smiled. “Thanks, and I haven’t seen you before, so just starting? Do you all ways carry a bag of medical supplies with you? Relax we are not going to bite. Do you need help?” He started wrapping the ankle.
Samantha blinked a bit. “Um, well, mostly I will have a bag with me. It is my meds and then the nurses at my old school wouldn’t treat us so it was just a good idea to have a few things at hand. I will be starting here Monday, if I am able. I have just moved out here and your air is a lot different then what I am used to. The abundance of grass and trees changes it, makes it more alive somehow. Which might mean my meds will need adjusting again.” She shook her head. “I hope not, I really don’t want to see a hospital bed again anytime soon. My Dad is bringing the car closer as my legs have limited my walking, though it is getting better. I hate how week they are right now. A snail could win a race with me I’m positive, for all they are said to be slow.”
The boy blinked. “Just why wouldn’t the nurse see you? And more grass?” Don’t worry your legs will get better faster than you think.”
Sam said. “I am from Rock Creek Mane, so it is a big change. The school was a low one and so couldn’t afford the separate facilities need to treat those with Adsons. So by law she couldn’t do so.” Not that she was willing to.
