5082 moved in going for supper.
Kat heard the question and tried to find an answer that was vague enough. It was clear that Mrs. Lares was trying to place her, no reason to help her. After all that feud could still be going strong. “Both sides have there stories of life on the other. Few on either side ever try to see beyond them. I was attracted to the old places all my life. The ruins called to me and so in time I answered, and went further than I expected to. However there are some lessons that can only be learned here and so it is time that I take up those studies. For all I expect most of my days to be spent in other lands, it is hard to know what the Goddess has in store, so best to be prepared as one can be.” Billy looked at her then at her arm, having not seen the necklace. “My way is not known here, but the path shares some with the Sheves you know. Are they still so distrusted in the common?”
Billy said. “Most are fine with them, but there are some that just see them as to strange to know, Some that insist they feel they are to good for us. That when they are out with us they are slumming. My cousin is like that. His folks sneer each time one comes to their shop, for all they never do it when they can see.”
Kat said. “Outsides are always get a few double looks. I expect a few no matter how I try to blind in, and there will be times I don’t try. I am not going to be upset to be thought other.” The lift stopped and the door opened. Kat had to remind herself not to step out, to let them show her the way. For all she wanted to get there. She did have to shake her head a bit at the paint work. They had kept the flames and red carpet. Truly she hadn’t thought it would taken up when she suggested it.
Billy said. “I love the hall, but my Aunt refuses to visit us, Saying we live in the den of evil itself. All the decorations are drawn from the local beliefs of the dark realms. Most have flames of some sort. There is ice flames for the frozen ones see. The carpet is a match to the tower at Scholar so we are walking on them, putting it down. In turn they have redone the seventh floor there to images of the light realms and a black floor so they walk on us.” Kat laughed, that was to good. She had never expected them to do it. They had looked shocked that she would even suggest it. “They feared that there would be protests from the religious leaders, but as no images of the gods were used they actually find it fitting. Saying it is a way to showcase that all the varied beliefs can live next to each other peacefully. Though some are worried about those that would so willing live among the symbols of punishment. That the Dark realms are to be.”
Kat said. “I bet that means we get a few coming to save us, but it is worth it. I agree this is well done, it blinds well with the name of the tower. Now I see why the add said that it was on the bloody floor.” Mrs. Lares looked at her and some of the boys laughed. That was a bit alarming, but didn’t scare me off.”
Mrs. Lares said. “No wonder there were so few that asked about it. I should have looked at the listing. I can’t believe they listed it like that. Makes it sound like there is trouble here. I assure that there is not, it is all respectable people, just a of odd decoration and molding.”
Kat said. “I was just intrigued by the listing, and the pictures of the apartment sold it for me. However I can see why it might put some off, but I can’t be sad it did. For after all I have the apartment. Was it empty long? Don’t worry I am not going to back out. I fell in love with it, for all I have yet to see it in person.”
Mrs. Lares said. “It has been up for sale for the past six months. That is long for here, we normally have places sold in a month. Here we are, I hope you like it as well in person as you did in the add.” She unlocked the door and led them in. Kat looked around smiling, and a bit shocked.
“It looks like it was never lived in. Yet I know that this building is five years old. They must have redone everything. This is amazing. Those moldings are even better in person.” Kat flushed, for she hap almost said guided, for the last time she had seen it just the base painting had been done. There were crossed horns in the corners, for those were the sign of the demon for this room, and staffs above the doorways. All guiled with silver, and the walls a pale gray. Right from the myths of the entry to the underworld belong to the religion that saw the number as bad luck. “This is to perfect. My Grandmother was Alaciding, and this would set her a boil.”
Mrs. Lares shook her head a bit. “The rest of the rooms play well. I was shocked myself when I first saw it. It is like the prior owner never moved in. I have no idea if that is the case or if they did remodel it. Still Where do you want the boys to set the bags?”
Kat blinked. “Sorry guys, I didn’t think of them. You can just leave them there. Thank you. Now if you want to see the rest you are welcome to, but don’t feel you must.”
Mrs Lares watched them put the bags down then payed them, two left the others stayed. She shook her head. “Come on and we will do the tour and get the papers out of the way.” It didn’t take long to walk though the place, four bedrooms and two baths.
The first room led into a fair sized living room that was an ice blue, with couches and chairs around a coffee table. There was a wall screen that was easy to see from them, not that Kat expected to use it much. Off to one side of it was a study, with built in red book shelves and a big table in the center. All with the red stained hard wood, that matched the shelves and floor, the walls what could be seen where white, but there were hints of flames to them. For that religion felt unregulated study was a danger. It was in fact the largest room in the apartment. The Kitchen, and dinning room were combined behind the living room, they were a a slightly yellow shade gray. Welcoming, for all there were horns on the walls and formed in the tile of the floors. A hall ran next to it and down it was the bath, with the normal fixtures, it was a sea blue and there were monsters on the wall, but nothing to alarming. Next were the bed rooms, the three smaller ones were white and red, with wooden beds in them and dark carpets. The master bedroom was done in browns, with a red floor, the bath off it had a sunken tub as well as a shower and was a dark blue shading to purple. At the end of the hall were two doors, one turned out to be a punishment room that was surprising well furnished. She had expected it to be hard to set up, but that would do nicely. Kat had to shake her head. “They did take to the them of the room alright. I don’t think many places here would have such. This is unexpected. I thought this would be a laundry room, for all there was a whip on the door.”
Mrs Leras was frowning a bit. “It is unusual, I can’t see it being planed this way. It must have been converted by the former owner. The papers say this is linen storage. The other door is to be the washer and dryer.” She opened it and nodded. “Larger than I thought, but it is what it should be, and there are shelfs here for the storage that the other room was to have been. So if you are still happy we can get the papers done and leave you to settle in. Are all of the boxes here that should be?” She led the way back to the kitchen and the papers that were on the counter there.
Kat nodded. “Yes, they are all here, and more than I sent. I was not worried about that. The apartment is far better than it was in the pictures. I am glad that it was still open. I was expecting signs of wear, but this is perfect. I do think that even Seal would be hard pressed to find a fault.” She took up the pen and sign the papers then turned over the last check. “You did say that a Craming back check would do, right? I fear that my own account will need a few days before I can safely draw on it. They need to triple check and make sure it all got transfered right. Best to be safe. I know I have the funds, but also know that things can go wrong when moving them around.”
Mrs. Lears nodded and took the check. “Yes, this is far better than a personal check for just that reason. Thank you, and do call if you run into any problems. I hope you are happy here. Come on boys, you don’t need to be noise about the her things. I fear they would be diving in the boxes if they could.” She herded them out the door. “I know you are wanting to get settled. Have a good day. With that she left as well.
Kat smiled after her and relaxed. Somethings never changed. Mrs. Lears could only hide her distaste as long as there was still money to be made. Once it was done her fear of mages came out. It was something that she agreed to work with me as long as she did. Now then to get the wards set and then unpacking will be fast. Sure enough two hours and dozen spells later the place was looking better and a lot of the boxes were empty. There were still books to put on the selves, but the bed was made, the extra bedding laid buy, clothes were put away and dishes in the cupboard. Wall hanging still needed to be hung, but that could wait until after she found some food.
Opening her front door she had to smile as Billy was coming out of his with a girl that was likely a sister. Billy said. “Mom this is Kat, sorry I didn’t get your lat name, but this is my Mom, Beth, and my sister, Alice, just ducked behind her. Mom was just saying we should go meet you all properly like. That you had to be ready for a break from unpacking by now.”
Kat laughed and held out her hand. “It is Kat Wildstone, I am surprised that you caught my first name. Mrs. Leras isn’t much of one for introductions. I had just decide it was time to find some food, so indeed I am ready for a break. It has been to long since I moved, I had forgotten how much work it is.”
Beth nodded. “Moving is all ways a mess. It is nice to have someone living there. Billy said that you you are from over seas? That is a big move to make.”
Kat nodded. “It is, but there are lesson I could only get on this side of the change. Things I will need to know when the next shift happens. In looking at the choices before me Scholars seemed like the best, for all this is not a place that I had thought to see again. My first years were spent not far from here, so it is known and unknown all the same. The area has changed just as I have.”
Beth said. “I won’t keep you, but just know if you ever need help find something you need only ask. We have only been in the city a year, but that is long enough to be good at finding the way around. It can be a maze, and the unwritten rules don’t help a lot.”
Kat nodded. “I bet not, given how it was before. There are going to be a number of places I shouldn’t shop, not that any will tell me to my face. Just politely cheat me in hopes I will not return. It will take time to work out the places. At least I do know it is there, which is likely more than you were told. I do know some of the names and so for now will stay to those, but would like your help in the market if you will be going. Most of those stalls will have changed hands. It used to be that the ones closets to the Governors house were least tolerant to new folks, but that doesn’t mean others won’t be.”
Beth said. “That is the case, but for this one it will extend to the left row, with there being some that have anti-magic charms openly displayed. Not that they won’t be there for other markets, just the charms are not as easy to see as they are during the first two of each new term. I fear that I will have a relative at one of those stalls.”
Kat said. “You are not your relative any more than I am mine. So don’t worry about that. Now then does Fred’s still have spicy ribs or should I go someplace else for supper?”
A man said. “His ribs are the best, can’t say anything about the spicy, as seeing my brother grab the water told me not to try them. He has a buffet going to night, so it is a good night to go. Just don’t think we were meaning to follow you, when we turn up there in a bit. He only does them once a month, so it can’t be passed on. It will be a full house.”
Kat smiled. “Good to know somethings don’t change. I was wondering if it would be, as it is the second Tuesday. Be interesting to find out if any there recognize me.”
