Petter smiled. “That sounds perfect. Thank you. Now then let’s see what we have to eat.” He started unpacking the the basket. There was a large green salad, thick slices of roast beef, big fluffy rolls, pie, and then butter and other spreads, with a jug of juice. As well as plates, knifes, forks and glasses.
Milly chirped. “Yes wist cuffs good idea. Mettle right?” Kat nodded. “Good you should. Oh good rolls! Nice soft rolls! And berry pie!” She looked at a dark line on the table then bathed it in fire. “There. Now anything you want warm, just sat it there. I think the likely had a fire under it, but that will work just as well.”
Kat laughed. “You need to eat more than bread and pie, but yes you can have some. I know full well that you are getting food in the village, you don’t need to be acting like you aren’t.”
Petter shook his head a few of the guards had backed up. He placed some of the rolls and meat on the stripe. “Thank you Milly, I was wishing there was a way to warm them I bit. Now there is enough here for everyone, so at least fix a sandwich, even if you don’t feel right about sitting with us.”
Milly said. “I never said they didn’t. Just that I wanted a roll. Those others might think I only eat bloody meat or something. There are all sorts of crazy stories.”
Kat shook her head and started fixing a plate, when it was done she put it in front of Milly. “Yes you will get pie as well, but I am not to let you have sweets until you have eaten.”
Milly gave her a disgusted look but started eating as Kat fixed her own plate. There were there talking and exploring for a few hours more, getting back to town around four. When she got back to her apartment she got out of the amour and her shoes then took out a necklaces with a red stone in the center of it. She smiled a bit, wondering just what they would make of it should the see it. She kept it under an illusion just so she didn’t have to find out. It was clearly magical, as well as being made from something they had no idea what was. They would never believe it was glass with a few drops of blood. Or if they did it would be just to label it evil. Best not give them a chance. She was cause enough changes as it was.
She bent her mind to the necklaces and found her self in a garden with her wingbrother. She bowed, for all he would tell her not to. I hope that this is not a bad time, Brother.”
The dragon rumbled. “Well it is no emergence or you would dispense with the silliness. How ofter must I say there are no titles among family? You get to caught up in it. At least Milly said you did forget it with your brother and his mate. So that is something. There are problems with their guards.”
Kat nodded. “However Cheetah has agreed to take it over, so that will see it fix. John have been running point on the personnel guards and so of course shorts his and Petters when something is going on. At this time there is little attention payed on them so it has been safe but that will change fast. He was planing on offering me the post so was willing to accept my recommendation. It is going to upset a few, but it will help as well.”
Blackfire said. “Indeed most objections will stop once they see that she holds rank. They are the best choice for a number of reasons. I am glad that they were willing. Even wanting to have eyes on you it wouldn’t have been easy.”
Kat nodded. “However John has been a guard for years, he is going to take to being guarding worse than I did and is not injured. That made it enough of a challenge they were considering even before I told them that Akland’s Royal house sponsored the campus, conceder its members a part of their army. You know they will do anything to get a piece of those monsters. It was a bit underhanded, but I need Cheetah here. Silith has been in the Palace. I could feel it, but that is not proof. Still in light of it I have a big ask. I know it is a lot and will understand if it can’t be. I want to give John and Petter tracking wist cuffs to exchange at the Coronation. Is it possible that the could be Spell Copper or Silver?” She relaying wanted the copper, it would be better protection, but the silver would still let her know if someone was trying to spell them. “You will of course keep a related talisman, and I am fine with that. I trust you fully.” Even if they add a spy spell I will accept it. They don’t want the kingdom, just want to know it isn’t set to move against them.
He said. “The cuffs will be delivered with the armbands for your seven, and you will have one tied to the spell. It is your right to ask for it I will see if Marasle will set the base spells to save you time. Get me sizes for them and we will get started on the armor so they can have it soon after the shift. We will send genetic for the troops once there is an agreement made, so you might want to see it is in there. That will help them. I do not like what I feel. There is great darkness string. Something has been held asleep but is being feed. None here have yet been able to see it.”
Kat said. “There were all sorts of monsters that hunted the lands outside shield here for years after the break, and some reports of them again after the last shift. Yet it is hard to separate myth from fact. I am sure they will be glad of the amour. They are not as blind as it looked, thank goodness.”
Blackfire. “That is good hearing, time is closing faster than thought, but it is still hard to see. Call me when you wish, I always have time to talk. How is it with the rest you know there? I don’t like you being alone, but understand why you need the month to get settled. Your team all take insults to your personal, so best they are not there to hear the first few encounters.”
Kat nodded. “So far I have not seen my mother, and my father only spoke to me as he was forced to. It is causing problems with the others. They are making their felling a bit to plan ti John and Rob at least. I think the rest as well, but they haven’t said as much to me. It is just what I feared would happen if I didn’t warn them, but worse as they tried to fake surprise when John told them he had seen me. Still I have done all I can. They are making the mess it is not on me to fix it. It isn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but it is odd. Still coming here was the right thing for me to do.” They talked a bit longer before parting.
The next week she started to settle in. The classes weren’t bad, most where useful which is better than she had expected. It was slower passed than she was used to, but that was good given that there were other tasks she had to do. It was odd to go to be a part of the meetings with the other ambassadors where she had so often taken the place of a guard. One of the older advisories actually told her to remember she was to talk not just give him notes, that a few of them were hoping to hear more of the comments that didn’t make those notes. She had laughed, but did try to speak up a bit more after that. Just she was the new person and so needed to get the feel of the power structurer before she upset to much.
Cheetah and her team get some double looks and comments, but were fitting in among the guards. It helped that they all took the tests without complaint. A few did leave over them actually bring in chanlinges, but less than Kat had expected. Truly there was not a lot of protest, showing her just how wrong she had been. Then it had been four years, but still the majority didn’t mind. That was getting her more support at home as the letters reached them. Truly enough here wanted the agreement that the haggling seemed more for show. All the same Kat needed it to be a fair agreement, for there was to much distrust of Nighlin. She didn’t want there to fear that it was a take over when things went bad after the shift and troops came to help. Yes there was such aid included in the agreement, but people would be more likely to believe it would be help to if Nighlin was fair in the dealings. That meant she needed it to be free and open trade on her side, that all goods could be bought, no matter if they limited imports. That had been a stumbling block at first as they were worried about letting magic items out into hands that feared those born of it. Thankfully that fear was shown to be less, yes it was there, but mostly it was the normal fear of those different and unknown not pure hate of the changelins. That helped ease fears. Still there would be restructured trade on the magic items for the first two years, but that should not be to upsetting. Most of the councilors understood it was done out of fear the harm those clouds could cause to those not expressed with them. That as the groups got to know each other trade would open for them as well. Truly a number seemed shocked that there were not more limits placed.
It was another week before they had the trade agreement written up, and the finale draft read. Of course there was one more meeting to go over any questions that the representatives who had not been at the other meetings had, then it would be signed. Truly this meeting was just a formality, there had never been an agreement that ended at this point, but there could be amendments made. Still it was good to have it done so fast she had expected it would be a few months not just two weeks. She walked over smiling a bit, thinking of the package in her bag, and hoping they liked the cuffs as well as she did. It hadn’t taken long to get the spells finished so she would give then to them tonight. That would see the links were strong when they exchanged them. She had agreed to stay for supper so would have time after the meeting to get them to them, without it turning into something she hoped. It was a mess. They were still insisting on her taking part, that they didn’t care what was going to be said. Rumors would happen no matter what, and they would die in time. One would think they wanted stories that they were becoming a part of Nightlin. I would think the treaty between us would be enough. It is going to cause outrage from a few. There have been others that have been trying to get agreements far longer than we have. Akland only has trade and limited at that.
She walked into the meeting and blink in surprise for her father was there. It was his right but he had seldom attended any of the treaty meetings before, even the others he opposed. Then the representative of the murchents had changed so he might feel that his objection will not be raised. She took her chair and said. “Sorry I am a bit late, my class ran long.”
Amring said. “You are not the only one. We are still waiting on Helen. So was it at least an interesting class”
Petter said, as he took his chair. “Not at all and there was no reason to keep us over he was just repeating the same thing he said at the start of class. It wouldn’t be as bad if it was related to the class, but he was reading Druns easy and drinking. The class is on spell casting. He could have at least went with Hunter and tied it in.”
