Wall hangings. 10,306
Kat got up and shook her head a bit as she caught her self listen for the calls of the fire birds that marked the morning at home. They couldn’t live here yet, but after the balance shifted, then she would bring a pair here. If she was still here then. They could well be off a dozen years, for all the starts were there. It was just strange to be here, at least she had been able to get the walls to glow that helped. She would have to get some local soap and shampoo today, save hers for when she needed a touch of home. Not that Seal wouldn’t bring her more with the spices, but still it would be better to use local. She was going to be standing out enough at it was. Then again maybe not as much as she thought. They sure didn’t see it last night. That was a surprise. She got out of the shower and dressed, staying to clothes that looked more like what was warn here. Long as they didn’t look to close. For the cloth was different and the cut. At least they all had the shield on them, that helped. Time for food then back to work. Need to get the wall hangings up, then go get the bulk items bought. They will come from the stores, not the market. Get me something that will get trough tomorrow as well, then fill the pantry.
She was working on putting up the wall hangings when there was a knock on the door. She started to it hoping it was Bobbie or his mother. She truly did need help with the hangings. She wanted the two main rooms to look right to those that would come, anticipating holding some study meetings here. As well as others. The less it was saying foreigner the better. It was fine that there were ones that wouldn’t be found in homes here, as long as the were hung right. Strange as that was, there were different ways of doing it. She opened the door and relaxed. “Just who I was hoping to see. Do come in. I need your help getting things to look right.”
Beth said. “I was just coming to see if you would like to go shopping after lunch? The stores here are a bit confusing at first and I need to get some done as well. There are a few things that you just can’t get when the market is going, for all that is the best time to get fruit and vegetables, all of the meat and dairy it is better to get from the shops. That said I am happy to help. So what do you need?”
Kat said. “I would like that, I was going to go see about the bulk items. It used to be that afternoons were best when delivers were needed. I don’t want to deal with carrying sacks of flour or sugar, but do need both. Well I need everything. I just bought bread and butter last night. I even forgot coffee, as late as I was.” She laughed. “Right now I am trying to get some pictures on the walls, but I an just sure that it isn’t looking right. That is, I fear that it shouts outsider to much.”
Beth nodded. “I know just what you mean. I had the same problem, and was scared the first few time I had to host a faulty meeting. Just let me go get Robbie and Alice, they both like to put up hangings, and so might as well let them wear their arms out.”
Kay laughed. “Sounds good, and if it doesn’t do it, I still have books to get onto shelves. I didn’t seem like that many when I packed them, but now. Of course it doesn’t help that there are four more boxes than I had shipped. Not to sure just how that happened.”
Beth said. “If they don’t then Dale will, given the chance. He is good at talking his way into libraries. I will be right back.”
Kat nodded. “Just come on in, and he is welcome anytime. I bet he will find a few books he wants to read. I do have some on the Neitlen and Creaction ruins, and a few other lost civilizations.”
She said. “Yes, I had best see if he wants to come over as well, for all it feels like we are invading.” Kat shrugged and she left. Truly it would help to have them here. They would let her see that things were looking right.
She left the door open and went back to the living room, only to frown and shake her head. That order wasn’t right. Yet she couldn’t see what was wrong. Just knew that it wasn’t right. Her mom and sister always took care of that stuff. Even in her room, saying she had no style. Clearly they were right. This wasn’t the right feel at all. “Maybe the. No, that one needs to be on the back wall. That I am sure, but that one is not the right one to have there. Still I do want the towns there, but maybe not those ones. They just aren’t the right shades somehow. I do need the palace there, but maybe one of these that isn’t so bright?”
Robbie picked you one of the darker ones. It had a pale blue background, with just a few storm clouds in it and the castle was done in darker gray. Ti was imposing, but the lights in the windows kept it from looking unwelcoming.“This one, where it is the center peace. Now which of the towns relate too it? They are the ones that should be shown next to it, then your home to the sides of them. That is how Mrs. Vergus and Mrs. Coldfish have it.” Kat started and looked at him. Just why? “They have each had me in to help with their redecoration. I make my goings doing yard work, but that sometimes translates as furniture mover to the ladies. As I pay attention to what they tell me I get more of the jobs, for they trust me to do it without having to be watched.”
Kat said. “Well thank you, that is what I need. I just can’t get it to look right. Not all of these will go up, I just don’t know what ones should or how many is enough. So have them all out trying to find what looks right. I have the towns sorted. Those in that stack are all of the capital, the next is my school, and then the town, there are some in each of life there. The next row is just purely art works. Then in the study I have some of ruins, those inspired by books and magic craft. I don’t know just how come there are so many. I ordered ten wall hangings not fifty. Ten would have been enough to change them out now and then. This.” She shook her head.
Beth said. “Don’t worry, it will help to have extras. That insures that you can get the pattern needed, yet have it be yours. GFo on and look at her books, that it why you are here, Dale. You don’t need to try and look interested.”
Dale said. “I am int rested in that one. I have seen that image before. I am just sure of it. Just can’t remember where. You said it was your capital?”
Kat nodded. “It is, but is biased on the one at Ralmes, so if you have been to Kalter, or seen Ronlnds book of images from it, that could be what it is reminding you of. That is the heart of the Nightlin Empire, and so just starting to be heard of around here. Feel free to look at the books, just know I have no idea what is in the boxes, so um. Be careful exploring them. Some of my friends feel I need to be more adventurous.”
Dale said. “I have seen those so that could be. Thank you for letting me look and for the warning. I do know how that can be. I asked a trader to being me books on Caleic, and failed to realize just what that could mean. So don’t worry.”
Kat said. “In that case go right ahead, just please put them on a shelve if you take them out of a box.” He laughed and went to the books.
Beth nodded. “That will keep him out of trouble now lets see what we have here. Alice you want to look at the art ones? See what ones should from the screen. I do like that farm you have up, but I think it needs moved.”
Kat nodded. “It does. I just hadn’t taken it down. I walked back in and was remind of an office. So I know I had it all wrong. My mother and sister always did the decoration, even in my bed room as they found me hopeless. At school no one cared and when I moved out I had others see to it. Well I should say my commander did as I wasn’t even there for any of it. Did even know I was moving that time.” She laughed a bit, then saw the look. “It happens to every one that makes rank. Once it is done they are moved out of the dorms, then each promotion means another move. The last one happened when I was acting as a guard. I was already a commander so didn’t see that be knighted meant I needed to move, but found out it did when it came time to go home.” That got them to laugh and by the time they stopped for lunch the place looked better and the extra hangings were stored.
Beth said. “Robbie go see what Heather has and if she will join us. No you don’t, we are bring lunch over.”
Kat said. “Well It feels wrong, you are working for me and feeding me, but I can’t argue. All I could possible do is take everyone out to eat. Soon though I will see that it is repaired, once I have enough to cook up a descent meal. So super here on Saturday? Lunch in the market is a must, of course, but they used to close at four.”
Beth said. “That sounds fine, if you still feel up to it after the market. They can be draining.”
Bobbie nodded. “Alice is getting her, that way she will come. Still do, they say that it is the only way to be fair to the established business. And, only open one Saturday a month during the summer, but as classes are starting they will go back to two. Just how did you come to sitting with princes last night? Grandma was a sight wen I said that lady was our new neighborer. It was great. Yet how do you know them?”
Kat blinked. “Princes? As in both? Just.” She shook her head. “I told them at the door that I was willing to joining any table accepting strangers, not thinking. So ended up there. That said. I followed my brother when he went to arms practice. They recognized me, for all I didn’t expect them to. I was wondering how that went over. I knew Petter was titled but didn’t know that he had talked Johnathan into it.”
Beth said. “His majesty found them in bed and said that was one way to see Petter was safe, but given it was that way he needed to join them at the table. Or so the story goes. The ambassador from Glaze stormed out, but relations with Vincice have improved a good deal. I think that has more to do with it.”
Kat said. “So that is why the ban on sale coastal maps was lifted. I thought it was more than the boats making it to Crimson, for all he said that was the reason. That better they have real maps then use fakes and find trouble. Casamer has very lax trade laws. Meaning fakes of anything are easy to get there.” She just bet that didn’t go over well with Mother, for he had been told to see it stayed quite, not to get noticed.
Dale said. “I was wondering how you could afford to have a coastal map made into a table cloth. However if they are common there it would be as odd. Still I think that table should be moved out here, not hid in the corner of the library.”
Kat said. “I intend to have it next to the couch, just haven’t got it moved. It is a tracker table. Watches the storms and the boats it is tied to to. They are common in sailors homes. I made a few for people here before I left, though the map wasn’t as complete.”
Beth said. “We had one, but it was a wall map. I didn't know they were ever built into tables. Still it needs to out here, you two want to get it moved as we get the table. Something like that needs to be seen.” Kat shook her as as they left to get and she started to the kitchen. “Come on Heather, right in here.”
Kat smiled and turned. “Thank you for lunch. Can I take something?”
The pale girl said. “We have it, thank you. This is amazing for having just moved in. I have to get a closet look at that tapestry. Just how did they get the glass in? I have done beads, but that looks like glass making the windows shine in those buildings.” She went on to the kitchen and sat the food down then came back and went over to the image of the school.
Kat said. “I thought it was the tread they used that caused it to sparkle. I truly don’t know.”
Heather said. “It is but.”She touched the hanging in wonder. “It is like it is mettle, but how? I have never felt threads like this. Clearly you have different frabrics. I wonder how hard it would be to work with.”
Kat shrugged. “I have no idea I have ran from anything that mother considered proper for a lady since I was old enough to. That said I will have Seal bring an assortments of our thread with him so you can find out. The less room he has for things he thinks I need the better. I fear just what all he is going to have with him, given all the things I found in the boxes. There were four boxes of nothing but blank paper of all things. I am still wonder why that was thought needed.”
She shook her head. “I wasn’t meaning, but I would would like to try it. There are colors here that I just haven’t seen. Yet it isn’t. Paper really? Why? Now I could see bedding or clothes, but paper? I mean it should be easy to know that we have that where there are the schools. Makes the weapon our family send look almost reasonable. If any of use knew what to do with them, that is.”
