Supper was had, and pepole met. 7740
He said. “So you know some here? I am Dale Leaders, and you must our our new neighbor. It will be good to have some life there at last. Far as any that speak to us know it has been empty.”
Kat said. “It sure looks like no one ever lived in it. Yes, I’m Kat Wildstone, now. I used to live here, years ago. Then I went and moved to the lands across the border, after being told not to even think of going to the ruins at Hunat Hill. I have changed a lot, so be interesting to see if any can place me.”
Dale smiled. “Family are tricky things. I grew up here as well, but left for a few years. My family has started to come around, but it took them a bit.”
Kat smiled. “Glad to know they are warming up. You left before I did, and I heard a good bit of complying about your doing so.” He looked at. “My family runs or ran, and likely still does, a grocery store. Your mother came in every Friday to complain about the fruit. We were not in the same school. I just know the name.” She made the rounds of all the stores to complain, so that was safe. For all most of times she was gossiping with mother not complying to her.
He smiled. “She does like to complain if it is not from the farms yet has to check the shops every week still. I had best lest you go and get changed. I was informed we are to meet them there in thirty minuets. Yes, that means you need to clean up, go on now. Just see you are washed, no need to dress up for ribs.”
Billy said. “Can I point out Ms. Wildstone to them? I can’t wait to hear what they say.”
Kat smiled. “Kat is fine, no need to make me feel older than I do. Just know that it will indeed be sure to cause yelling. After all I am clearly a mage, even if it is missed this time it will be noticed later.”
Dales said. “They will yell more if we don’t point you out when we first get the chance. So go ahead and do so. I think this time they will just say your name is strange and then start looking for more to find unfitting. Enjoy your meal. Come on guys, I can’t go dressed like this.” He got them back in and Kat made her way out.”
Kat got to the restaurant and found a line as she expected. It was odd not to push to the front, but it wasn’t like there was a seat waiting for her. Here she was not a Lord of the court, nor was she meeting the others. Paul or Johnathan would always run ahead and see that they had a table waiting. They were both well know and big enough to hold one. Likely they still had one, but it didn’t feel right to force her way in. She got to the door and was taken back by the noise and scents. It felt like she was just here, not that it had been years. She said. “I am alone and don’t mind sharing if there is a table accepting strangers.”
Fred said. “Katie! You are late, child. You were expected two years ago! Just what are you doing? Come on your spot is waiting.”
Kat said. “It is Kat theses days. I didn’t know I had a spot but won’t turn it down.” She moved, thinking she should have been a bit more careful, but protesting would just make it bigger. Might as well go with him. He would just point her out to them, should she not. Should have known he would see me.
Fred said. “Nonsense! You know full well that you have a chair waiting. You are just lucky dad is busy cooking or he would be yelling loud enough to bring everyone. Come on now.” He took her arm. “Good grief! When was the last time you ate? You are far to thin! Just why didn’t they feed you at that school? Dad is going to them delivering meals again once he sees you. Paul will be right there with him this time. You look.”
Kat smiled a bit and let a green flame show at her shoulder briefly. Somethings never change, but some do. She was a practicing mage, not a spell caster. It did make a difference. “I look like a mage, which I am. I eat twice as must most days and still never gain. It is normal for us. All the Jursn struggle with it. I am fine, I lost a bit on the ship, but less than I was expected to. Sea voyages are stressful for me, for all it was better than my first trip.”
Fred shook his head and took her to the table, pulling out the chair. “Say what you will. We have plenty of mages here, and I know there is no reason to look skeletal. You had best have a plate in full when Dad get out here with the hot ones. I don’t know what Jursn is, but I can tell you that nothing you say is going to convince him you aren’t starving. Colve spiced ale still or something different?”
One of the guards said. “Jursn? That is new to me as well. So I must ask, as you are sitting here. I can tell you are used to fighting. Normal it wouldn’t be an issues to have a strange join us, but there are concerns just now.”
Fred looked at him oddly, Kat shook her head a bit. “I can understand the need to know. I am no threat to any, but it is easy to see why you fear I could be. Jursn just a school much like yours.” She touched the green shield on her sleeve. “In your records it would be known as Justrens. The name changed as your own did over the years, still the principles are held to. My name is Kat Wildstone. I fear that you have no trade with Kittle, so do not know it, but it is to the south of Cail’s Port. I do hope that you don’t mind me joining you. I didn’t realize that I was being directed to a court table. Yet your uniform tells me that is the case.” Fred shook his head and stayed at the chair, for she hadn’t sat down.
Johnathan said. “Sit down sis. Fred needs to go tell them you are here before he gets yelled at. Besides that you look done in.” She shook head but sat. “There weren’t any storms reported, just why does it look like you haven’t ate a full meal in a month? How long have you been here and why the hell didn’t you call me when you got in? You should know better than that! Just four letter! Not even anything but you are fine and lists of classes. Like that is enough.”
Kat said. “Ale or bear is fine, just nothing fancy. I don’t need to forget where I am. I wrote more, but some might not have made it. I didn’t want to push. I have no place here now and so best not to act like I thought I did have. I wasn’t ready to hear from anyone. I know I caused a lot of pain, and well. I should not have left as I did, yet at the time it felt right. As to my wight, I am a practicing adapt mage that causing changes in my appearance. I am at a healthy wight. I did lose a few pounds on the trip here, but I will get them back quickly. Sea voyages are stressfully to me, but I am getting better with them. My first trip we were attacked and got hit by a storm as well, so each time I get on a boat the memories come back. It helps that I know more about fighting now than I did, for all I had passed the guard test. It was a month after I left so I was still adjusting to how big the world was on top of learning how little I knew. Now I meant it, I don’t want to force myself on you.” Just how do I tell them it is fine not to want me. That they are welcome to ignore me? I am not the same person who used to tag after them. Yes I need to get close to Petter’s father, but it isn’t right to use the past. She looked again at the guards and frowned, for they were in full uniform.
Petter said. “No dad’s not coming, we are just stuck with guards for a bit as Acklend is in town. They should be leaving today or tomorrow so they will lose the uniforms at least. So what have you been doing and what took you so long? We expected you last year at the latests. Your leaving was a shock do only to when. We all knew you would be going to the Ruins. Though hearing your crossed the sea was a surprise.” Kat shook head a bit a pate was put in front of her, but reached for her fork. “No yelling? Now I really am worried.”
Kat said. “Like I said it is going to be easy to forget where I am, it has been a long day. I just made it into town and have been unpacking. At home I would be waited on, in fact in a month or so I will have a servant here. I should have now, but there wasn’t one that fit me. Like I told your guard, my school is related to his, and that includes the sworn servant. For all it was an adjustment. Yes Rob, aunt Heather wins, or half does, for it is a sister group that I joined. That is what I have been doing, attending school and learning to handle the nodes. I was not planing on returning so don’t see how I am late. Turns out that I need to learn Shellin methods, and well. I was thinking of making do with a school that has a professor from here. However, well I had been admitted to Scholar before I left and it seemed silly to not find out if that offer was still there. Not that it was easy, for I had to get another school give me transcript, mine being unknown outside of Nightlin.” They looked confused. “That is the name of the empire, that cover most of the eastern contestant. Your ambassador has met with Mark’s people.” Only after she said did she here it, but well to late to do anything about it.
Johnathan said. “Mark? Interesting, but that will wait until everyone is here. However I am going to get it out of you. Now eat.”
Kat shook her head. “I am not starving, but I have missed the ribs.” It was a relief to turn to the food for a bit. Which happened just in time as She had just taken her third bit when Frank was there put a platter of steaming ribs and grilled vegetables in front of her.
“To think I thought the boy was over doing.” Frank shook his head. You eat all that, and I will know if the boys help. You will be taking food with you. I I don’t know what you have been doing, but you haven’t been eating. That had best change now. I won’t have it. You were to thin before, now a wind would send you flying.”
Kat shook her head. “I am a mage, that means if I wasn’t eating twice as much I would be worse. I am healthy. I will just have to see that Seal comes with me when he gets back, then you will see. Trust me I am not going to be missing any meals. This will be gone and more.”
He just looked at her. “See that it so. You are still not leaving empty handed.” He left and Kat turned to the food.
Only to realize the other were looking at her. “You need to eat not just watch me. I have missed this food. Our peppers are different, and while I have gotten used to them, they just don’t have the same flavor. Then not all of the spices used here can be found. Just as some I am used to I won’t find here.”
Johnathan said. “I am just waiting for the flames. “I don’t have to try that to know it is spicier then what he has out. I still don’t know how you can eat it. Seal is an odd name.”
Kat said. “Seal is what came to him, as a Cat came to me. He is sailor by blood and works the boats when he can. Oath brother, not a lover. Yes he will be staying with me now and then. That was part of the arrangement. For messages can only do so much.”
Petter looked at her then at the symbols on the sleeve. “So not just any knight, but ranked. Int resting, but that to needs to wait or you will get tired of saying it. Still I can tell that you will make us work for the explanation we are owed. Just why did you only write to your parents after that first letter? And why did ours just say you weren’t in Coldfalls?”
Kat said. “There should have been another letter a month ago to each of you. I am sorry it didn’t reach you. You needed to move on. I never expected to be back here and didn’t want you all planing on me being here. I heard about the flood and sickness that followed it. I couldn’t let you worry I was there so sent the birds to each of you. Other than that. Well it was enough you knew I was alive. If mother or father read the letters and shared news then you would hear. If not. Well I needed the time. It was easier on me not to think of what it had to of been like for you. Leave was hard, it hurt me so I know it was worse. Still I was wrong not to write more, but it took a lot of tries just for the letters I sent. There were a lot that never made it past I am well, if they got that far.”
Robert said softly. “Even that would have been better than nothing. Yet I can see where you are coming from. For all I wish I didn’t. It can’t happen again. I will not stop them from hunting you if you try it.”
Kat said. “I can stop your hunters with a word these days. That said you have my name now, you can send a bird to me from the ambassadors supply. That said You will have a better way to reach by the time I return home. That is the best I can do. This is your home, but it isn’t mine.” They looked troubled but nodded.
As good as the food was it was a relief to leave. That was not what she had wanted, but should have been expecting it. At least it was out now. Should make it a bit better on campus tomorrow. She still stoped at the store, for the some bread and butter, but it was to late to get more. That would wait as well. Once home she got the food stored, more ribs and some lunch meat, with sides of coures, and a cake. At least he hadn’t sent any beer.
