2639 for today. It worked. 15299!
Jade was smiling as the truck stopped in front of the large four story house. She knew it was upsetting the others, that they were lost and hurt. They had not wanted to come here, but it was the only thing that could be done. There was no way to keep their plant safe from the advancing army. They just didn’t have the needed tec to defend it. If they had of let the force help once contact was made. They were just to sure of their superiorly, because our life on plant looks backward to them. It is not the first time and it is a mistake we to made with older races. It was changing as they came to see us, and in time they would have let us help. There was no reason to rush, no one expected the Claxtons to rise. There should have been time. Yet now. All we could do is buy them time and offer homes. There is a colony world, but it is not ready for to many yet. Though they are letting us help it will still be a few years. So in the mean time a bunch of other planets have offered to take them in, some have abound places where they can even set up their engorgements. Here they are just going to have to fit into ours, but there is room enough and some adjustments have been made. The old power grid is being rebuilt just so they will have the wiires they are used to, and sings have been added in their language. Still it is going to be hard for them.
I know that, but it is still good to be home at long last. I missed it so much. I am just glad that Fred agreed it was silly not just to come here, as much as he didn’t want to see it again. That saved that fight, at least. Still it is going to be rough when I take a place on a ship, as I must. She hoped out only to laugh as a flurry of wings swooped down on her whisting and chirping. “Yes, I am back. I sent Robin ahead to let everyone know we would be here in an an hour. For all I know she told you the moment I left the station. No I will not be crossing that long again. I know none of you liked, but it had to be done. Now settle down, you are scaring those with me. I know full well that Robin told you they thought her a monsters, and she looks more like a bird than the rest of you. You know that they don’t have beings like you. Everything here is strange to them, they don’t know what is safe. You need to settle before they will get out, yes I know you are excited to have new people, but give them time.” She turned back to the wagon. “Come on it is safe, it is just my swarm that I told you about. I know it looked spooky, but it is safe. They are just happy to see me and want to meet you. They are all excited by the people that have been coming. They are glad you are here, for all they know you are upset to have to leave your homes. The little ones here truly don’t understand where you came from, just that you had to leave your home do to bad people. They find it strange that you think they are scary, that you haven’t seen angels before.” Why hadn’t Fred told them? He should have let them think it was something attacking them. He knew that she would be swarmed. After all they knew her and they didn’t like it when their wingless children were out of reach for more than a night. They swarmed him as well the first few times he returned, before he changed enough not to be theirs anymore. I guess he was hoping I had as well. No matter how I said that his life was not mine.
Slowly the others got out Fred looked around and shook his head. “Nothing changes. It is still. I don’t see how you can be so glad to see those again. It is a bit much. All of this. At least they did let them put some electricity in. That will help. This is just.” He sighed. “I don’t see why you are so glad to see this. There is still trees right up to the yard! It is. All those wild things. I do hope that the fence has been seen to. The children are not going to be able to find their way. They are not wild.”
Jade shook her head. “There is a mile to the forest and the first three miles of it is safe, with well groomed trails. As you know full well. That said when your children go out they will just take the bus to town, not go out back. After all they are town children. Don’t go scarring them so. Guys really there is a bus stop right there, and one comes by each hour. It is just ten minutes to the town we came through. I know you didn’t get a good look, but surly you saw enough to realize it has stores and restaurants. For all you didn’t see the arcade there is one. We will go there soon so you can get a better feel for it. Then the same bus will take you on to Clayton, which is a city with everything the town might be missing. I am not sure if any of the earth business are running yet, but they were given buildings and help to get going. There will be somethings missing for a bit as it is learned how to make them with what we have here, but there will be somethings you know already among all the strange.”
Alice said. “The town looked big enough to have everything, but there is another not far? The people at the station gave us a list of the business that were open and the ones that would be. It is surprising how fast they are able to. I did not expect there to be so much done just for us. To put up a grid that you have no need to and let our business have spaces that had to have already been been there. Just how? There are trails in the forest? That will help, it will be closer to my jogging trails. Father will get over it in a bit, don’t mid him. He gets like that when things don’t go his way. It was doing the same pouting when you were arguing about moving in with us. I think this looks nice. It is not at all what I was expecting. We will adjust, for all everything seems so big.”
Graint said. “Clayton is an hour away and it has the larger mall. We had a lot of buildings that were maintained but empty yet. It is good to see them being used at last. A few need some changes made, but even that is a help. There has been little work for builders outside of the bit of repairs. Most have been taking jobs on other worlds so are glad to have something to do at home. When you lose a fourth of an already small population it hurts everyone. We should have seen that attack for the warning it was. Yet we put it down and so thought it was just them testing to see if we were watching. Not that they were preparing something to large to be pushed back. For that we are sorry. Now then, just the front half of the house is connected to the grid. The back half has been left. That will let those that find the charge of the wires a comfortable space. Though so far the improved shielding on the wires seems to be working just fine. It is not something that was ever put into use as the grid was dieing out by the time it was found.”
Fred shook his head a bit. “See, that is what happens when you are forced to test old stories. You find out just how little truth there was to them. It is good to see that something is being done to make us appear less backward. I am sure you will learn just how good it is to have dependable energy and not need worry about it being cloudy when you need to run more than the basics. We should see the rooms then get this unloaded, I think. Did the rest of the bags make it? They wouldn’t let us have more than one case with us. Barely enough to hold a weeks worth of clothes. Even with the bit the let use put on the ship, if it didn’t lost, there will need be a shopping trip for everything that was lost. I don’t see why it was needed. This whole thing is disgusting. Just how did they ever get built up? Clearly the force got infected by the same backward thinking. Just as I feared. Letting technology go backwards!”
Graint winced a bit and looked at Jade. “Sir, do remember that there are members of the force in the family. They know that you are upset at the lose of your home, but that is a bit close to a challenge. That said, we have lost nothing. We can and will meet the Claxtons. We just can not be sure of the amount of damage they will be able to do outside the Warned Wall. Therefore it was best to see that those planets received the chance to evacuate. No one likes it. We are all upset by the size of the force and are scrambling to find out where it came from. That said the last of the transport ships is clearing the Wall and it will be raised before there is any danger. None of the enemy fleet has yet pasted Reglaus, but we are sure that they will be able to. However there is nothing that has made it past Warned without a key. They can not have an active key. Even should they get a hold of one of our ships, they will not be able to make use of the key. Now come and and see the rooms. Your things made it, but we wanted you each to pick your own room, so everything is in the front. The dragons will see to the moving just write your name on the door and they will see boxes marked with it get the room. Now if there is a box not marked you will need to say it is yours, but they will take it. Trying to do so yourself will just get it taken from you. They feel it is there place to do all carrying. Mostly I think it is because they like to show off.” They looked a bit worried at that, but before they could ask Jade got her trunk out of the truck and sat it down. Three dragons raced for it the blue one landed on the trunk and the gold one on her shoulder, wrapping a tail around her neck. The red one hovered in front of her scolding loudly. The blue one and the trunk vanished. “As I said they like to show off. Yes Jade is getting yelled at. Rusty is saying that she knows full well she should have called Ribbion the moment she was back. That letting Robin see to it was not right. She is not to go off without Ribbion again. It isn’t safe.”
Jade shook her head. “Never mind they all agreed that Ribbion couldn’t travel to earth with me. I am in trouble for it. And yes that was the last time I go anyplace with her. No pilot should be without a key and it is time I complete my tests. Never mind what I might think I need. Now come on. I want to see what rooms you all pick, then those that want can see mine. Graint the ones around Fred and Violet there are siblings, the rest are relatives.”
Fred frowned. “Yes we did forget to say who anyone was. For all it shouldn’t be needed. He should have been with you. I will give that Albert could not, but I lost that. Come, the sooner the rooms are found the sooner we can tell what is needed. As Jade said we will get you a tour of the town here and the city, which is where you are more likely to go. We can get the computers there as they were out at the port. At least they had phones, that is a help. I do not expect you to do without just because yours had to be left. The class at least was able to see you had somewhat of an idea what was there.”
Graint said. “We have desktop for the older children. Of course it might not be the right ones, but it will let them get started finding out where there friends are. The interstellar communication is going to be slow, but it is running.” He led them in the house and then on to the living room where the bags were. “They are in stacks by name, all those there are unmarked. So if you are missing any check there. Most of the bedrooms are upstairs, but we do have a few here so we will start with them. Not all like stairs.” He still wondered just how he ended up being the one to do this. It should have been Albert or Henry, where Grandfather wasn’t here and Jade was with them. However Albert still wanted to murder him and yell at Jade so best he didn’t take it and best that he had time with Henry to work it out before he had to deal with them. Jade didn’t want to go there to fast. That was a part of why she ran. She does look better, it is easy to tell it was hard on her, but the year was what she needed. He led them to the bed rooms downstairs and he he expected the older lady there took one of them. As soon as she had started to write her name they were bringing her boxes in.
She said. “Yes, lad I do think you are right, they just want to show of. They are darling. You all have such a wide verity of life here. I am glad to get a chance to see it, for all this was not what I had in mind when asking about it.”
Jade smiled. “Nor was it what I did when saying that you could just come home and stay with me. All the same I am glad that you are here. It isn’t right that you were denied a chance to meet Sara. I can’t fix that, but I can see you meet her children. Mrs. Rosen worked on the Hilderburg Hydro plant, but only spoke to Sara over the computers. I am sure that Liz and Greg at least will want to talk with her. They were in some of those meetings as well.”
Graint nodded. “I will call them tonight. They both have asked me repeatedly is Janet Rosen was among the relatives that were coming. No matter how often I said it was such a rush that you had not been able to do more than say the family was coming before contact was lost.”
